The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a categorical directive prohibiting the charging of fees for the issuance of West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificates. This announcement comes in the wake of a widely circulated video depicting a headmaster allegedly demanding GH¢200 from students as payment for their WASSCE certificates. The video captures the headmaster’s insistence that students must pay the stipulated amount or risk forfeiting their certificates, even challenging them to pursue legal action. The GES, through its Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer, Henry Osei Boateng, has unequivocally affirmed that the cost of WAEC certificates is fully incorporated into the WASSCE registration fees. Speaking on Otec FM’s morning show “Nyansapo,” Mr. Osei Boateng emphasized that no additional charges should be levied for the issuance of these certificates. He stated that the only justifiable reason for a student to make a payment to the school would be to settle any outstanding debts owed to the institution.
