The Liberian government has accused Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe of Bomi County of orchestrating a subversive plot to destabilize the administration of President Joseph Boakai. The government alleges that Senator Snowe, who is also a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, threatened to leverage his influence within the regional body to obstruct the government’s success, potentially discouraging foreign investment and creating instability. The government asserts that these alleged statements were made on the floor of the ECOWAS Parliament and were met with disapproval by Senator Snowe’s colleagues, who viewed them as a threat to Liberia’s peace and stability. They reportedly advised him to apologize to President Boakai to avoid potential expulsion from the ECOWAS Parliament.

Following this advice, Senator Snowe, accompanied by Senate Pro-Temp Nyonblee Karnge-Lawrence and Speaker Richard Koon, purportedly met with President Boakai. While images of the meeting were released on social media, no official statement clarifying the meeting’s purpose was issued. This lack of transparency fueled speculation and further complicated the situation. The government, in its official statement condemning Senator Snowe’s alleged actions, emphasized that no citizen has the right to undermine the country’s stability for personal gain and urged international organizations to prevent any destabilization attempts. They reaffirmed their commitment to peace and development and assured citizens of their ability to maintain stability.

The Liberian government’s accusation centers on Senator Snowe’s alleged vow to utilize his connections within ECOWAS to hinder the Boakai administration, even if it meant jeopardizing Liberia’s stability and discouraging foreign investment. This alleged statement, reportedly made during an ECOWAS Parliament session, sparked concern among his colleagues, who viewed it as a serious threat to Liberia’s peace. They subsequently urged Senator Snowe to apologize to President Boakai to avoid potential disciplinary action, including expulsion from the regional body.

In response to the controversy, Senator Snowe reportedly sought a meeting with President Boakai, accompanied by Senate Pro-Temp Karnge-Lawrence and Speaker Koon. While photographs of this meeting circulated on social media, the absence of an official statement detailing the discussions left much to interpretation. The government, in its official statement, strongly condemned Senator Snowe’s alleged remarks, emphasizing that such actions undermine national stability and are unacceptable.

Senator Snowe vehemently denied the accusations, characterizing the government’s statement as reckless and irresponsible. He viewed the accusation as a politically motivated smear campaign designed to silence dissent and intimidate opposition voices. He asserted that the allegations, which he described as tantamount to treason, were baseless and defamatory, posing a threat to democratic principles and the rule of law.

In his defense, Senator Snowe highlighted the severity of the accusation, equating it to a charge of treason, and emphasized its baseless nature. He framed the government’s actions as a deliberate attempt to suppress dissenting voices and undermine the democratic process. He also announced his withdrawal from the ECOWAS Parliament mission, citing the gravity of the accusations and the need to address them thoroughly. He formally notified the Liberian Senate of his concerns and called for an independent investigation into the matter. He maintains his commitment to clearing his name and upholding democratic principles.
