The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), led by Deputy Chief Executive Officer Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, popularly known as Abeiku Santana, is at the forefront of this initiative. A recent tour of northern Ghana, including a visit to the Gulkpe Naa’s Palace in Tamale, underscored the government’s dedication to this vision. Mr. Aggrey emphasized the government’s commitment to developing tourism as a key driver of economic growth and job creation. The visit was part of a broader five-day tour of the northern sector, demonstrating the importance placed on incorporating all regions into the national tourism strategy.
The delegation’s itinerary included a visit to the Red Clay Studio, a unique contemporary art space founded by acclaimed artist Ibrahim Mahama. The studio, constructed from repurposed abandoned materials, including old aircraft parts and trains, serves as a powerful example of sustainable tourism practices. Mr. Aggrey praised the studio as a testament to the innovative potential within the tourism sector, highlighting how discarded materials can be transformed into valuable tourist attractions. The delegation’s tour served as a prelude to the 2025 PANAFEST and Emancipation Day celebrations, a significant event on Ghana’s cultural calendar. These celebrations hold profound historical and cultural significance, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Africans and fostering connections with the African diaspora. The chosen theme for the 2025 edition, “Let Us Speak of Reparative Justice – Pan-African Artistic Activism,” underscores the ongoing dialogue surrounding the legacy of slavery and the pursuit of restorative justice. The tour, encompassing the Savannah, Northern, and Upper East Regions, aimed to build momentum and engagement leading up to the event, which will culminate in Cape Coast. The team’s itinerary also included planned visits to the Bono, Ashanti, and Central regions, emphasizing the nationwide significance of the event.
The government’s commitment to establishing Ghana as a premier tourism destination is further exemplified by the “Black Star Experience,” a flagship tourism program designed to strengthen the seven pillars of tourism, arts, and culture. This initiative aims to showcase the diverse cultural heritage and artistic expressions of Ghana, enhancing the country’s attractiveness to tourists. Mr. Aggrey emphasized that every community has a unique role to play in developing Ghana’s tourism profile, citing Tamale’s renowned leather industry as a prime example of a culturally significant economic activity that can attract tourism.
The importance of northern Ghana in the national tourism narrative, particularly in relation to the PANAFEST and Emancipation Day celebrations, was highlighted by Taqiyya Salem, a PANAFEST representative. She stressed the historical significance of PANAFEST in strengthening ties between Ghana and the African diaspora, emphasizing its role in promoting economic growth through tourism. Lawyer Angelou Dogbe, Northern Regional Director of GTA, emphasized that while the main celebrations take place in the south, the historical roots of emancipation are deeply embedded in the north, making it a crucial part of the historical narrative. The visit to the Gulkpe Naa’s Palace and the engagement with local leaders demonstrated a commitment to collaborative efforts in developing the region’s tourism potential. The Secretary to the Gulkpe Naa, Mohammed Rashad, welcomed the GTA’s visit and echoed the call for enhanced collaboration to leverage the region’s tourism assets for economic advancement and job creation.
