The Lagos State Safety Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with Nigerian artisans and technicians to enhance safety systems and prevent workplace accidents. During the opening ceremony of the 2024 Nigerian Artisans and Technicians Conference, themed “Enhancing Workplace Safety Best Practice for Informal Sector,” Lanre Mojola, the Director General of the commission, emphasized the importance of supporting informal workers in ensuring their safety at home and at their workplaces. The event served as a platform for discussing best practices in enhancing safety among various artisan groups, highlighting the government’s role in creating a more secure working environment.

Mojola’s address marked the fourth edition of the conference, during which he praised the contributions of the Nigerian Artisans and Technicians Conference Organization (NATCO) in promoting safety practices and collaborations with different levels of government. He acknowledged the diverse range of artisans, from auto technicians to builders, emphasizing the progress made in fostering relationships that prioritize safety and well-being in the informal sector. This acknowledgment underscored the critical need for comprehensive safety measures to protect the lives of those engaged in various trades.

Addressing the staggering statistics from the International Labour Organisation, Mojola shed light on the global urgency for improved workplace safety. With approximately 395 million workplace accidents occurring each year, and nearly three million resulting in fatalities, the situation demands immediate attention and action. He urged stakeholders to cultivate a robust safety culture that includes proper use of Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE), insurance, and regular health checks. The DG stressed the importance of leadership commitment and participation from all stakeholders in fostering a proactive safety environment in their workplaces.

Furthermore, the commission is dedicated to providing resources and tools to assist local artisans and technicians in adopting safe practices. Mojola reinforced the importance of the slogan “See it, Speak it, Sort it,” advocating for a culture of openness and responsibility where workers feel empowered to address safety issues. This proactive approach is essential in minimizing workplace-related injuries and fatalities and enhancing the overall health and welfare of artisans and technicians across Lagos State.

During the conference, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, expressed her appreciation for NATCO’s consistent efforts in promoting safety and economic development through innovation and youth engagement. Represented by Popoola Abimbola, the minister recognized the vital role of artisans and technicians in driving economic progress, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to various sectors. As the government continues to support these initiatives, the collaboration between the private sector and state authority remains crucial in fostering a robust informal economy.

Dayo Bello, the convener of the conference, articulated the organization’s intent to create a hub that connects local artisans and technicians with international stakeholders and visitors. This initiative is aimed at fostering valuable networks and collaborations that can lead to sustainable economic development. By bringing together artisans from diverse backgrounds and encouraging knowledge exchange, NATCO aims to enhance the skills and safety practices of its members, ultimately contributing to the growth and sustainability of the informal sector in Nigeria. Through such conferences, there is potential for strengthened partnerships and a more concerted effort toward enhancing workplace safety and economic resilience in the informal economy.
