Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, inaugurated a new residential facility for Nigerian Air Force personnel stationed at the Port Harcourt NAF Base, underscoring his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies and recognizing their vital role in safeguarding lives, property, and national assets. The project, initiated in 2017 but left unfinished, was revived and completed by the Fubara administration at a revised cost of N454 million, up from the original N212 million. Governor Fubara emphasized that such investments are essential, not just for the welfare of security personnel, but also for the overall security and economic well-being of the state, particularly in the face of challenges like oil theft and pipeline vandalism. He reiterated his belief that supporting security agencies is not solely the responsibility of the federal government, but a shared duty that requires contributions from all levels of government.
The provision of comfortable housing for Air Force personnel is seen as a crucial factor in boosting their morale and enhancing their operational effectiveness. By ensuring that the officers are well-accommodated, the government aims to improve their performance and productivity in tackling security threats and protecting critical national infrastructure. The governor stressed that his administration’s support extends beyond the electorate to encompass all institutions that play a crucial role in maintaining peace and security within the state. This approach reflects a comprehensive strategy that prioritizes collaboration and resource allocation to enhance the overall security architecture.
Governor Fubara’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force goes beyond the housing project. He affirmed his administration’s intention to continue addressing other requests from the NAF Base, aiming to make it a model facility and the envy of other bases across the country. This dedication to providing necessary resources signifies a long-term investment in strengthening the partnership between the state government and the Air Force, fostering collaboration and mutual support in the fight against crime and the protection of national interests. The governor envisions a robust and well-equipped base that can effectively respond to security challenges and contribute to the overall stability and prosperity of Rivers State.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, lauded the housing project as a testament to the strong partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Air Force. He acknowledged the significant positive impact the facility will have on the quality of life of NAF personnel and their families. Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted the reciprocal nature of the relationship, pointing out the Air Force’s contributions to the state’s security, particularly through operations against illegal oil bunkering, which safeguards the state’s economic lifeline and fosters a conducive business environment. The Air Force’s provision of access to airfield facilities and security services for state-owned aircraft further underscores the mutually beneficial collaboration.
The inauguration of the housing project represents a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Air Force. It symbolizes a shared commitment to security, welfare, and mutual support in addressing the complex challenges facing the state. This collaborative approach, where both entities contribute their resources and expertise, is seen as crucial for achieving lasting peace, security, and economic stability in Rivers State. The project stands as a tangible example of the positive outcomes that can be achieved through effective intergovernmental cooperation and a shared vision for a secure and prosperous future.
Commander of the 115 Special Operations Group, Air Commodore Ali H. Idris, expressed gratitude for the Governor’s leadership in prioritizing the welfare of NAF personnel. He recognized the strategic importance of the housing facility in enhancing operational readiness and strengthening the partnership in combating crime within the state. Commissioner for Special Duties, Rowland Obed-Whyte, described the completed project as a monumental achievement, emphasizing its significance after years of abandonment.
