Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, in a comprehensive address to stakeholders, presented a detailed account of his administration’s achievements. He highlighted significant strides in fiscal responsibility, infrastructure development, education, transportation, and security, painting a picture of a state on a trajectory of progress and transformation. Central to his message was the emphasis on prudent financial management, evidenced by a remarkable reduction in the state’s debt profile. From a staggering N259 billion in 2020, the debt burden has been slashed to N99 billion, representing a 60% decrease. This fiscal discipline, coupled with a remarkable 500% surge in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), has provided the state with the financial latitude to invest strategically in critical sectors, driving development and enhancing the quality of life for Imo citizens.
Infrastructure development emerged as a cornerstone of Governor Uzodimma’s agenda. He proudly proclaimed that his administration has constructed more roads than all previous administrations combined since 1999. Over 120 roads have been completed statewide, with 37 brand new roads delivered in the past 18 months alone. These projects, alongside the iconic International Conference Center, the Government Housing Annex in Orlu, the Assumpta Flyover, and the new Concorde-Hilton Hotel, stand as tangible symbols of the government’s commitment to modernizing Imo’s infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for economic growth. Specific road projects, such as the Toronto-Orji Road, Naze-Ogbosisi Road, and numerous others across different LGAs, were cited as testaments to this infrastructural renaissance.
A key element of Governor Uzodimma’s vision for Imo State is a strong focus on education. The establishment of a new federal university in Okigwe, complemented by a substantial N39 billion take-off grant approved by President Bola Tinubu, signifies a major milestone. This addition brings the total number of public universities in Imo State to five, an unprecedented achievement that underscores the administration’s dedication to expanding access to higher education and nurturing human capital. This investment in education is seen as crucial for empowering the next generation and fostering a knowledge-based economy.
The transportation sector also received significant attention. The upcoming launch of the Imo Heartland Mass Transit Programme, featuring three strategically located bus terminals and 256 bus stops across the state, promises to revolutionize public transportation. This initiative aims to enhance mobility, reduce travel costs, and generate employment opportunities, further contributing to the state’s economic dynamism. The construction of modern bus terminals and shelters reflects a comprehensive approach to creating a comfortable and efficient public transport system.
Beyond physical infrastructure, Governor Uzodimma emphasized advancements in governance and public service delivery. The full automation of the civil service, aimed at eliminating fraud and streamlining operations, coupled with ongoing training and retraining programs for staff, demonstrates a commitment to modernizing government processes. The prompt payment of salaries and pensions, along with the processing of backlog promotions, reflects a focus on employee welfare and a commitment to creating a motivated and efficient public service workforce.
Finally, Governor Uzodimma addressed the critical issue of security. Acknowledging past challenges posed by politically motivated insecurity and violence, he emphasized the collaborative efforts with the federal government and security agencies to restore peace and stability.
