The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, found himself embroiled in controversy following a seemingly innocuous handshake with Ralph Williams, the individual at the epicenter of a recent disruptive incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, commonly known as Ridge Hospital. Mr. Williams, identified as an NDC activist, had stormed the hospital’s emergency ward with a group of men, creating a chaotic scene that included verbal assaults on staff, unauthorized filming of patients, and disruption of hospital operations. His actions stemmed from accusations of negligence against the hospital staff regarding the treatment of an accident victim. Days after this incident, a video capturing Mr. Akandoh shaking hands with Mr. Williams during a visit to the hospital went viral, sparking criticism and accusations of bias, particularly from the Ghana National Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA). Critics argued that the handshake signaled a lack of seriousness in addressing the gravity of the situation and appeared to condone Mr. Williams’s behavior.

Responding to the mounting criticism, Minister Akandoh addressed the issue in a press conference, defending his actions and clarifying his stance on the incident. He explained that his handshake with Mr. Williams was simply a matter of common courtesy and did not represent an endorsement of his actions. He emphasized that as a public official, he is obligated to acknowledge greetings, regardless of the individual’s background or even criminal history. Mr. Akandoh drew a parallel, stating that even if Mr. Williams had been convicted and imprisoned, he, as a minister, would still be obligated to respond to a greeting. He stressed that this simple act of courtesy should not be misinterpreted as hindering any investigations or actions taken by the ministry or government to address the incident.

Furthermore, Mr. Akandoh revealed the context behind the encounter, explaining that Mr. Williams had previously attempted to meet with him at his office to present his perspective on the events at Ridge Hospital. Having missed that initial meeting, Mr. Williams approached the minister at the hospital. This clarification aimed to dispel the notion that the handshake was a premeditated display of support, positioning it instead as a circumstantial encounter. The minister reiterated that his primary concern was to ascertain the facts of the incident and ensure appropriate measures were taken.

The incident at Ridge Hospital unfolded when Mr. Williams, accompanied by a group of men, entered the emergency ward and engaged in disruptive behavior. He accused the hospital staff of negligence in their treatment of an accident victim, leading to heated exchanges and a general disruption of the hospital’s operations. The situation escalated to the point where some staff members reported being physically assaulted by Mr. Williams and his companions. The hospital management confirmed these reports and officially reported the incident to the police, initiating a formal investigation into the matter.

Following the incident, Minister Akandoh announced the formation of a committee tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the events at Ridge Hospital. The committee was given a one-week timeframe to complete its investigation and submit its findings, including recommendations for sanctions where appropriate. This demonstrated the ministry’s commitment to addressing the issue and ensuring accountability for any wrongdoing. The minister emphasized the importance of due process and a fair investigation, while also acknowledging the need to address the concerns raised by the GRNMA and other stakeholders.

In the aftermath of the incident and the ensuing controversy, Minister Akandoh’s defense of his handshake with Mr. Williams highlighted the delicate balance between social decorum and the perception of impartiality in public office. While the minister maintained that his action was a simple act of courtesy, the criticism he faced underscored the potential for even seemingly minor gestures to be interpreted within a larger political and social context. The incident also brought to light the importance of clear communication and transparency from public officials, particularly when navigating sensitive situations with the potential for misinterpretation. The focus remains on the ongoing investigation and the eventual outcome, which will determine the consequences for those involved in the disruption at Ridge Hospital and hopefully provide a resolution that addresses the concerns of all stakeholders.
