Mr. Jonathan Julius Kukah, the National Democratic Party (NDP) parliamentary candidate for the Ho West Constituency, recently called on constituents to support his candidacy, emphasizing priorities such as improved representation and sustainable development for the region. During a lively debate organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) at Dzolo Gborgame, Kukah argued for a shift away from the dominance of Ghana’s two major political parties, advocating for the need for fresh leadership that is focused on real-world solutions. This forum provided a platform for Kukah to communicate directly with community members, share his vision, and discuss pressing local issues alongside other candidates, although both opposition candidates from the NDC and NPP were notably absent from the event.

Kukah articulated his vision for enhancing education in the constituency, particularly by advocating for better implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. He proposed that establishing community farms would not only support local school feeding programs but also serve as job creators for the youth. His plan involves creating farm produce that could be branded and sold in larger markets, which he believes will foster entrepreneurship and economic growth. In this initiative, he aims to engage local youth, including visual arts students, empowering them to take part in the branding of their agricultural products, thereby giving them valuable skills and experience.

On healthcare, Kukah pledged to collaborate with various stakeholders to improve health infrastructure in the area, specifically by building clinics and providing hygienic facilities in market areas. He highlighted the importance of making healthcare more accessible, especially for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). His commitment includes ensuring that schools are equipped with disability-friendly structures and that health insurance services are delivered directly to residents’ doorsteps. Kukah responded to the voters’ concerns by emphasizing a holistic approach to improving local healthcare, directly addressing the barriers faced by marginalized groups in the community.

Addressing local educational challenges, Kukah reassured teachers, students, and parents of his dedication to enhancing school safety by prioritizing the fencing of educational institutions and the completion of a community center. His proposal also includes the formation of farmer groups that would receive training on using agrochemicals responsibly, aiming to boost agricultural productivity while safeguarding environmental health. He urged local chiefs to release land for community farming initiatives, citing such farms’ dual benefits of providing food security and economic opportunities for residents.

During the debate, Evangelist Emmanuel Agbo, the chairman of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC), stressed the significance of peaceful discourse in the electoral process and the role of candidates in upholding democracy. He encouraged constituents to engage constructively with candidates and to avoid behaviors that may lead to conflict or tension. Mr. Kukah concluded his address by reaffirming his commitment to peace and encouraging his supporters to foster a climate of harmony within the community as elections approach.

In terms of security, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rockson Gyasi, the Ho West District Police Commander, provided reassurances about the safety of the electoral process, encouraging the public to report any suspicious activity that might threaten peace. This event, attended by various community stakeholders, including local leaders and representatives of the disabled community, underscored the critical importance of community engagement in governance. Despite the absence of major party candidates, Mr. Kukah seized the opportunity to share his ambitious vision for the Ho West Constituency, positioning himself as a forward-thinking candidate focused on the needs and aspirations of his constituents.
