The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has disconnected the Obafemi Awolowo Train Station in Moniya, Ibadan, Oyo State, from the power grid due to unpaid electricity bills. This disconnection, which occurred last month, highlights the ongoing challenge of debt recovery faced by electricity distribution companies (Discos) in Nigeria, particularly from government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). The train station, a vital transportation hub connecting Lagos, Abeokuta, and Ibadan, now faces potential operational disruptions due to the lack of power supply.
The disconnection stems from the train station’s inability to settle its outstanding electricity bills. The situation was exacerbated last year when the station was migrated to Band A, a tariff category that resulted in a more than 200% increase in its electricity bill. IBEDC has stated that the Moniya 33kV feeder, which supplies power to the train station, remains disconnected due to non-payment. This action underscores the Disco’s resolve to recoup debts owed by various entities, including government bodies. This is not the first time IBEDC has taken such drastic measures; the University College Hospital and the Liberty Stadium in Ibadan have also faced disconnection in the past due to similar issues of unpaid bills.
IBEDC has confirmed the disconnection, stating that the company has been engaging with the train station’s management to find an amicable resolution. While acknowledging the disconnection and ongoing discussions, IBEDC declined to disclose the exact amount owed by the train station, citing extant laws that protect customer financial information without their express consent. The power company emphasized its commitment to resolving the issue while adhering to legal and regulatory requirements regarding customer privacy.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), responsible for the operation of the train station, has been contacted for comment on the situation. While the NRC acknowledged the inquiry, they have yet to provide an official response. The lack of a clear statement from the NRC leaves questions unanswered about the reasons behind the unpaid bills and the steps being taken to address the situation and restore power to the station.
The Obafemi Awolowo Train Station, formerly known as the Moniya Train Station, holds significant importance in Nigeria’s transportation network. Commissioned in June 2021 as part of the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway line, it serves as a critical link between these major cities. The modern facility, named after the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a prominent Nigerian statesman, boasts various amenities, including ticketing booths, waiting areas, restrooms, security checkpoints, and parking facilities. The ongoing power outage poses a serious threat to the station’s ability to function effectively and maintain the comfort and safety of its passengers.
The disconnection of the train station underscores the complex relationship between Discos and their customers, particularly government entities. While Discos are tasked with providing reliable power supply, they also face the challenge of recovering costs and ensuring financial sustainability. The situation highlights the need for effective communication and timely payment of bills to avoid disruptions in essential services. The continued lack of power at the train station raises concerns about the potential impact on commuters and the overall efficiency of the railway network. A swift resolution is crucial to restore power to the station and ensure the smooth operation of this vital transportation link. The incident serves as a reminder of the broader issues surrounding electricity supply and payment in Nigeria, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions to ensure reliable power for critical infrastructure and public services.
