The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Gombe State has initiated a comprehensive training program for Registration Area Officers (RAOs) in preparation for the in-person phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. This training, held at the Women Development Centre, brought together RAOs, Electoral Officers from all eleven local government areas, staff from the Voter Registry/ICT department, and members of the State Management team. The training aims to equip these key personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct a smooth and credible voter registration process.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Gombe State, Sa’ad Idris, emphasized the critical role of voter registration in ensuring credible elections. He stressed that the credibility of any election hinges on the integrity and transparency of the registration process. This training, designed as a refresher course, seeks to familiarize RAOs with the updated registration software and procedures, ensuring they are fully prepared for the upcoming exercise. Idris underscored that the CVR exercise would not be conducted in a “business as usual” manner, emphasizing the need for integrity, professionalism, and strict adherence to guidelines throughout the process.

Idris issued a stern warning that any breach of duty, including delegating responsibilities to unauthorized personnel, would attract severe sanctions. He assured the participants that all their entitlements would be paid in full, but emphasized that accountability and adherence to ethical conduct were non-negotiable. Idris also highlighted the importance of effective supervision by Electoral Officers at the local government level and pledged to personally monitor the exercise through field visits and public feedback. This multifaceted approach combining training, oversight and accountability mechanisms aims to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the CVR exercise.

To further enhance public awareness and participation in the CVR exercise, the REC approved the release of public address systems to local government offices. This initiative aims to bolster voter education and sensitization efforts, ensuring that citizens are well-informed about the importance of voter registration and the procedures involved. Idris directed the Head of VR/ICT to ensure the proper configuration of the INEC Voter Enlightenment Device and prioritize practical simulations during the training sessions. These measures seek to equip both INEC staff and the public with the information and tools they need to actively participate in the CVR exercise.

The training program is a comprehensive effort to prepare RAOs for the in-person phase of the CVR by focusing on refreshing their knowledge of updated software and procedures, emphasizing the paramount importance of integrity and professionalism, and providing practical simulations to strengthen their skills. The REC’s commitment to personally overseeing the process through field visits and public feedback mechanisms reinforces the commission’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

By combining these training efforts with a commitment to accountability, robust public sensitization initiatives, and direct oversight, INEC in Gombe State is taking proactive steps to ensure a credible and inclusive Continuous Voter Registration process, laying the foundation for free and fair elections. This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment to upholding the democratic process and ensuring that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.
