In an initiative aimed at fostering collaboration between diverse groups in Lagos, the non-profit organization Twenty Bucks Creative has underscored the importance of unity for peaceful coexistence among government officials, civilians, military personnel, and other security agencies. This call for unity was made during the launch of a football tournament scheduled for October 3rd to 6th and October 11th to 13th at the Navy Sports Camp Football Field in Apapa. Charbel Olusanya, the organization’s leader, expressed his vision for the tournament, highlighting that it seeks to bridge the gap between various segments of society through the universal language of football.
Olusanya, a passionate football enthusiast, noted that football serves as a powerful unifying force within Nigeria. He articulated that the purpose of the tournament extends beyond recreational play; it aims to bolster relationships among government entities, security agencies, and civilians. The tournament will feature participants from organizations such as the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers, providing a platform for interaction and collaboration within the community.
Having grown up in a military environment, Olusanya’s connection to the barracks has deeply influenced his efforts. Although he is not a soldier himself, he is committed to giving back, particularly focusing on the children of military and security personnel who are essential to the nation’s safety. This tournament is, in his view, an opportunity to promote unity among different societal segments while highlighting the importance of youth involvement—furthermore, it marks a unique approach to community engagement that has not been previously attempted at such a scale in Nigeria.
As an added engagement aspect, Olusanya revealed that participants in the tournament will specifically be children of those serving in the various security agencies. His organization is dedicated to providing young talents with newfound opportunities to demonstrate their skills on a larger stage. This initiative is reflective of Olusanya’s heritage, as he proudly discussed his familial ties to the military, noting that his grandfather was a retired Brigadier-General. Such personal connections drive his mission to uplift and empower the youth, particularly those linked to the military.
The tournament promises exciting rewards for the winners, with the first prize set at 1 million Naira, the second prize at 600,000 Naira, and the third at 300,000 Naira. In addition to competitive sports, Olusanya emphasized the importance of gender balance by incorporating women empowerment activities during the event. Such activities will invite women from the audience to participate in football-related challenges during the halftime breaks, further promoting inclusivity and growth in women’s sports.
The upcoming tournament has sparked enthusiasm among the youth in Lagos, as many recognize Olusanya’s efforts to elevate grassroots football to international standards. Participants have lauded his commitment to being a voice for young people and providing them with a platform to shine. This tournament is not merely a sporting event; it is a historical occasion aiming to reshape community dynamics in Lagos, encouraging collaboration, understanding, and mutual respect across different societal sectors. Through such efforts, Twenty Bucks Creative is set to sow the seeds for a more united and peaceful Nigeria.
