This incident revolves around the tragic death of a 19-year-old boy, identified as Obeng, who allegedly committed suicide while in police custody at the Simpa police station in Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, Western Central Region of Ghana. The unfortunate event unfolded after Obeng was accused of stealing six blades of gold from his roommate and co-worker, Isaac Asare, a small-scale miner. The timeline of events leading up to Obeng’s death provides context to the tragedy.

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, Isaac Asare, upon returning from work, discovered that six blades of gold were missing from his room. Suspecting Obeng, his roommate, Asare initiated a search for the missing gold. Five days later, on June 6, 2025, Asare, accompanied by a group of individuals, apprehended Obeng and brought him to the Simpa police station. Obeng was subsequently detained on allegations of theft. According to the Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Kusi Appiah, Obeng confessed to the crime during the initial investigations and even guided the investigator to the location where he supposedly sold the gold. However, the alleged buyer was not present at the time.

The situation took a grim turn on Sunday, June 8, 2025. At approximately 5:00 am, the non-commissioned officer on duty at the charge office discovered Obeng’s lifeless body hanging from the inner cell gate. He had apparently used a torn piece of his blanket to fashion a noose. This discovery immediately raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Obeng’s death and the security measures in place at the Simpa police station.

The Western Central Regional Police Command, under the leadership of Chief Superintendent Kusi Appiah, has launched an official investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and circumstances of Obeng’s death. This investigation will likely delve into various aspects, including the procedures followed during Obeng’s detention, the security measures within the cell, and any potential contributing factors to his alleged suicide. The investigation’s findings will be crucial in understanding the sequence of events that transpired within the cell and whether any negligence or foul play was involved.

As part of the standard procedure in such cases, Obeng’s body has been transported to the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital mortuary in Bogrekrom for autopsy and preservation. The autopsy report will provide critical medical evidence regarding the cause of death and help corroborate the initial findings. It will also shed light on any potential injuries or other factors that might contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the death.

This incident highlights the critical need for robust protocols within police custody, particularly concerning the safety and well-being of detainees. It emphasizes the importance of regular checks on detainees, the provision of mental health support where necessary, and ensuring a secure environment to prevent such tragedies. The investigation’s outcome will hopefully shed light on any shortcomings in existing procedures and inform recommendations for improvements to prevent future occurrences of similar incidents. The thorough investigation and subsequent actions taken will not only serve to address this particular case but also demonstrate a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals within police custody.
