The IREDE Foundation, a Nigerian non-profit dedicated to empowering children with limb differences, has broadened its mission to address workplace inclusion for all people with disabilities (PWDs) with the launch of a comprehensive recruitment toolkit. Recognizing that many organizations lack the practical knowledge and structured approach to effectively hire PWDs, the toolkit provides step-by-step guidance, from crafting inclusive job advertisements to ensuring accessible recruitment processes and work environments. This initiative, part of the Foundation’s Disability Empowerment and Employability Project (DEEP), aims to bridge the unemployment gap and foster genuine long-term inclusion for PWDs. The toolkit’s built-in tracker and checklist simplify implementation and promote consistent application of inclusive practices.

The toolkit is not a standalone effort but part of a multi-faceted approach by The IREDE Foundation to drive systemic change. Complementing the toolkit, the Foundation facilitates monthly “Open Mic for Disabilities” conversations, providing a platform to challenge stereotypes, raise awareness, and connect businesses with disability inclusion experts. Furthermore, a stakeholder conference convened by the Foundation brought together public and private sector representatives to discuss disability employment and policy implementation, fostering collaboration and shared responsibility for creating an inclusive workforce. These initiatives collectively aim to shift organizational culture towards valuing individual differences and recognizing the contributions of PWDs.

The Lagos State Government, a key supporter of the toolkit launch, expressed its commitment to promoting inclusion across all levels. Several ministries, including those focused on women’s empowerment, youth and social development, job creation, and environment and agriculture, have been directed to integrate inclusive practices into their programs. This includes allocating specific opportunities for PWDs in empowerment initiatives, events, and employment schemes. This government-backed drive for inclusion signifies a concerted effort to move beyond policy pronouncements to tangible action, impacting various sectors and creating a more accessible and equitable society.

The toolkit addresses a critical gap between policy and practice, particularly within workplaces where inclusion often remains a theoretical concept. It emphasizes the importance of moving beyond mere legal compliance to create environments that are physically accessible, communication-friendly, and safe for individuals with diverse disabilities, including those with albinism, visual impairments, and mobility limitations.
