As Ghana gears up for the 2024 General Elections, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) is taking proactive measures to bolster the capabilities of its security personnel through the final session of its Election Violence and Security Course. This course aims to equip 82 officers with essential skills to address potential security challenges related to the parliamentary and presidential elections. Organized with support from the German government, the training is divided into two cohorts. The initial group, consisting of 41 officers, will be trained from October 14 to October 18, while the second cohort will follow suit from October 21 to October 25. Participants hail from various security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, and National Intelligence Bureau, reflecting a joint effort to ensure national security during the elections.
Col. Anorph Barnabas Akanbong, the Director in Charge of Training at KAIPTC, emphasized the critical role of security personnel in maintaining order during elections, underscoring the inherent tensions that often accompany such events. He articulated that elections inevitably bring potential for unrest and violence, necessitating well-prepared security officers who can effectively manage any emerging conflicts. The training aims to educate participants on their fundamental roles in maintaining peace and orderly conduct during electoral processes. Col. Akanbong asserted that KAIPTC’s ongoing efforts will contribute significantly to achieving a peaceful electoral environment come December.
The collaborative effort for the training is further underscored by remarks from German Course Director, Mr. Norbert Wienold, who highlighted the commendable commitment shown by the officers participating in the course. His acknowledgment of their dedication to peace reflects the expectations tied to their responsibilities during the upcoming elections. This solidarity between international and local organizations speaks volumes about the shared goals in ensuring the security and stability of Ghana’s democratic institutions.
Apart from the core training focus, ACP Edem Evelyn Agbitor, the Course Director, pointed out the need for seamless collaboration among all security agencies to maintain peace during the electoral period. She stressed that the responsibility of ensuring a peaceful election extends beyond security personnel to include the active participation of all Ghanaians. Her call to the public underlines the belief that a violence-free election is a collective victory, emphasizing community support for security measures that enhance order during the electoral process.
The KAIPTC has already conducted three similar courses in Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale, solidifying Ghana’s commitment to comprehensive security training ahead of the elections. The scope of these nationwide training efforts reflects the importance placed on ensuring that security forces possess the appropriate strategies to deal with any arising issues during the electoral period.
