The Kano State House of Assembly has categorically refuted recent reports circulating online that allege an impending investigation into Hajiya Sa’adatu Yusha’u, the Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State and Chairman of Tudun Wada Local Government Council. The Assembly, through its Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Kamaluddeen Shawai, dismissed these reports as false, misleading, and a deliberate misrepresentation of legislative procedures. The reports had claimed that the Assembly was poised to probe Yusha’u over alleged irregularities in land allocation.

The Assembly clarified that the receipt of a petition by the Majority Leader, Lawal Hussain-Dala, does not automatically translate into an endorsement of an investigation or a pronouncement by the House. Shawai emphasized that the Majority Leader had neither granted an interview nor issued any statement to any media outlet regarding such an investigation. The Assembly stressed its commitment to constitutional processes and due process, highlighting that any investigation must adhere to established procedures, including ensuring a fair hearing for all parties involved. The dissemination of the unsubstantiated reports, according to the Assembly, is a calculated attempt to tarnish the image of both the Majority Leader and the legislative institution itself.

The Kano State House of Assembly underscored its prerogative to receive and consider petitions from individuals or groups, but stressed that such actions are always guided by transparency and the rule of law. This principle of transparency and adherence to legal processes forms the cornerstone of the Assembly’s operations. The Assembly therefore views the publication of the false report as a blatant disregard for these principles and a deliberate attempt to undermine the integrity of the legislative process. The false narrative also undermines public trust in the institution and potentially prejudices any future legitimate inquiries.

The Assembly further emphasized that the act of receiving a petition is a standard part of legislative procedure and should not be misconstrued as an indication of an impending investigation. The process, as explained by the Assembly, involves a thorough review of the petition to determine its merit and whether it warrants further action. This process allows for a fair and impartial assessment of the claims made in the petition, ensuring that any subsequent action is justified and based on evidence. The premature publication of the report, therefore, not only misrepresented the legislative process but also potentially prejudiced any legitimate inquiries that may arise from the petition.

Furthermore, the Assembly articulated its commitment to uphold the principles of fairness and due process in all its undertakings. This commitment extends to ensuring that all parties involved in any legislative inquiry are given a fair hearing and the opportunity to present their case. The Assembly’s statement serves as a reassurance to the public that it operates within the confines of the law and upholds the highest ethical standards in carrying out its duties. This dedication to due process is crucial to maintaining public trust and ensuring the integrity of the legislative process.

In response to the dissemination of the false information, the Kano State House of Assembly has demanded a retraction and public apology from the individuals and media outlets responsible within seven days. Failure to comply with this demand, the Assembly warned, will result in legal action. This firm stance demonstrates the Assembly’s commitment to protecting its reputation and maintaining the sanctity of the legislative process. This action underscores the seriousness with which the Assembly views the false reports and its determination to ensure accountability for the dissemination of misleading information. The demand for a retraction and apology serves as a clear warning against future attempts to misrepresent the Assembly’s actions or undermine its integrity.
