The political landscape of Kano State, Nigeria, witnessed a significant development with the resignation of Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, the Commissioner for Transportation, following an investigation into his alleged involvement in securing the release of a suspected drug baron, Sulaiman Danwawu. Namadi’s resignation, announced through a statement by the Director General of Media and Publicity for the Kano Government House, Sanusi DawakinTofa, came shortly after Governor Abba Yusuf received the report of a fact-finding committee tasked with probing the commissioner’s role in the controversial bail. Namadi’s action underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the fight against drug-related crimes in the region and the delicate balance politicians must strike between personal actions and public perception.

The statement conveying Namadi’s resignation emphasized his commitment to the public interest and the sensitive nature of the case. In conducting the inquiry, the committee determined that Commissioner Namadi’s failure to conduct due diligence as to Danwawu’s reasons for detention and background prior to signing his release bond constituted negligence, especially considering the nature of the charges against Danwawu.

The committee’s report, presented first to the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, and subsequently to the governor, concluded that Namadi acted negligently in standing surety for Danwawu without conducting due diligence.
