On Sunday, the Katsina State Government formalized a strategic partnership with Ocean Solutions Energie, aimed at expanding sustainable electricity access to at least 4,400 households. The announcement came via a statement from Ibrahim Mohammed, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, in light of recent challenges faced by the state, including extensive blackouts that left residents frustrated and scrambling for alternative power sources for their electronic devices. This initiative appears timely, as the region grapples with recurrent power issues that highlight the urgent need for stable, renewable energy sources.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Governor Mallam Dikko Radda and Dr. Hafiz Ahmed, his Special Adviser on Power and Energy, during a trip to Paris. The French company, Ocean Solutions Energie, led by its Chairman Mr. Minkaila Salam, specializes in co-developing renewable energy projects across Africa. Governor Radda emphasized that the agreement is part of a broader effort to deliver reliable, renewable energy solutions, aiming to make use of the state’s extensive hydroelectric potential through its 43 dams. This initiative is expected to pave the way for a more resilient energy future in Katsina.
The governor mentioned plans for a pilot project involving the establishment of a mini hydroelectric power station at the Danja Dam. This project is intended to provide energy to essential local services, including irrigation systems, a water treatment facility, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises and households. By investing in such infrastructure, the state government aims to ensure that the benefits of sustainable electricity reach various facets of community life, thus enhancing overall quality of life.
In conjunction with the new MoU, the agreement is aligned with the recently enacted Electricity Act of 2023, which underscores the need for decentralized energy solutions and the integration of renewable energy sources into Nigeria’s national grid. Furthermore, this effort is in line with fulfilling the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, which advocates for affordable and clean energy. This comprehensive approach underscores the Katsina State Government’s commitment to modernizing its energy sector while also adhering to global sustainability benchmarks.
In addition to addressing issues of electricity access, Governor Radda announced plans to revitalize the state’s dormant 10MW Wind Farm located in Lambar Rimi. Following nearly two decades of inactivity, the government has engaged with Vergnet Groupe, the original equipment manufacturer, to rehabilitate this energy asset. Radda reiterated that his administration is fully committed to restoring the facility to meet Katsina’s growing energy demands and to ensure its operations align with Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Master Plan as well as the country’s net-zero goals projected for 2060.
The culmination of these projects is part of Katsina State’s ambitious vision to become a pivotal renewable energy hub in Nigeria. By facilitating better access to clean energy sources, the state aims to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s transition towards a sustainable energy future. Governor Radda’s administration sees these initiatives as integral to fostering economic development and improving the living conditions of residents, ensuring that the benefits of sustainable energy are universally accessible within the region.
