The Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, presented a substantial budget proposal of over N580 billion for the fiscal year 2025 to the Kebbi State House of Assembly. Christened the “Budget of Economic and Infrastructural Consolidation,” this ambitious financial plan underscores the government’s commitment to driving economic growth and enhancing the state’s infrastructure. A significant portion of the budget, amounting to N453 billion, is earmarked for capital projects, reflecting the administration’s focus on long-term development and infrastructural improvements. The remaining N127 billion is allocated for recurrent expenditure, covering the day-to-day operational costs of the government. This significant investment in capital projects highlights the government’s dedication to transforming Kebbi State’s physical landscape and creating an environment conducive to economic prosperity.

The proposed budget anticipates a revenue generation of N235 billion from statutory allocations, which represent the state’s share of federally collected revenue. In addition to this, the state government projects an internally generated revenue (IGR) of N26 billion. Governor Idris expressed his satisfaction with the consistent growth in the state’s IGR, viewing it as a testament to the improving financial health of Kebbi State. This focus on IGR diversification demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening its financial autonomy and reducing reliance on federal allocations, fostering greater fiscal independence and stability in the long run.

The “Budget of Economic and Infrastructural Consolidation” prioritizes several key sectors crucial to Kebbi State’s development. Agriculture, recognized as the backbone of the state’s economy, is a primary focus, aiming to bolster food security and enhance agricultural productivity. The budget also targets investments in mineral resources, aiming to tap into the state’s untapped potential and diversify its revenue streams. Infrastructure development features prominently, with allocations for projects such as roads, bridges, and other vital infrastructure to improve connectivity and facilitate economic activities. Social welfare programs are also included, ensuring that the benefits of economic growth reach vulnerable populations. Finally, the budget emphasizes youth and women empowerment, recognizing their critical role in driving sustainable development.

Governor Idris highlighted the government’s proactive measures to bolster food security, citing the free distribution of fertilizers to farmers as a key initiative. This program aims to enhance agricultural yields and improve the livelihoods of farmers across the state. Furthermore, the administration has empowered 65,000 individuals with N100,000 each, providing seed capital to stimulate entrepreneurship and promote self-reliance among the populace. These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to investing in human capital and empowering citizens to contribute meaningfully to the state’s economic growth.

The governor also acknowledged the Federal Government’s decision to hand over the construction of the Koko-Dabai-Mahuta Road to Kebbi State. This strategically important road project is expected to significantly improve transportation infrastructure, facilitating trade and commerce within the region. Governor Idris assured the Assembly that the state government would soon commence construction of the road, underscoring its commitment to timely project execution. The enhanced connectivity this road will bring is anticipated to stimulate economic activities and boost overall development in the affected areas.

Finally, Governor Idris commended the harmonious working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government, highlighting its positive contribution to the state’s developmental progress. This collaborative spirit between the two branches of government is seen as crucial for effective governance and the successful implementation of the ambitious development plans outlined in the proposed budget. The governor’s emphasis on this collaborative approach reinforces the importance of unity and shared vision in driving progress and achieving the state’s development objectives.
