In a recent interactive session held in Lokoja, Kogi State, Governor Ahmed Ododo urged the Directors of Local Governments and Treasurers to prioritize the principles of local government autonomy and adhere to professional ethics while executing their duties. This gathering emphasized the role of local government administrators, who serve as the representatives of the state government at the grassroots level. Ododo underscored that their effectiveness would not only enhance the synergy between the government and the community but also foster development within local government administration.

Governor Ododo acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Directors of Local Governments (DLGs) and Treasurers, particularly their role in maintaining accurate financial records and upholding ethical standards among public sector accountants. He emphasized that these practices are vital for ensuring transparency and accountability within governance. By encouraging a culture of professionalism, these officials can positively impact the public perception of local government, contributing to better service delivery and increased trust among citizens.

The governor’s expectations included a collaborative effort among the DLGs and Treasurers to tackle the challenges faced in local government administration. He called on these officials to unite and support the efforts of the state’s Accountant General, Habibap Onumoko, in bringing essential services and developmental projects to the communities they represent. During the session, Kogi State House of Assembly Speaker, Aliyu Umar, praised Ododo’s leadership style, highlighting his commitment to transparency and accountability. Umar expressed the assembly’s ongoing support for the governor’s initiatives aimed at increasing citizen engagement and enhancing governance at the grassroots level. This alignment between the executive and legislative branches is significant in ensuring that policies are effectively implemented and that the populace reaps the benefits.

Habiba Onumoko, the state Accountant General, welcomed participants and commended Governor Ododo for his focus on grassroots development, particularly initiatives promoting youth and women’s empowerment. She highlighted the governor’s efforts in creating job opportunities and his overall impact on enhancing government performance. Her recognition of Ododo as a humble leader committed to service reinforces the importance of leadership that is approachable and dedicated to addressing the needs of the community.

Aliyu Musa, the chairman of the forum of DLGs, expressed appreciation for Ododo’s initiatives, particularly the approval of the new minimum wage of 72,500 naira for state workers, which has improved the welfare of civil servants. His acknowledgment of Onumoko’s professionalism in her role further underlines the critical need for skilled and ethical leadership in local governance.
