The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has expressed its observations regarding the growing speculation surrounding former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to the presidential race in 2027. Jonathan, who lost his reelection bid in 2015 to Muhammadu Buhari, is reportedly being encouraged by supporters to contest the 2027 elections. The APC, however, questions Jonathan’s political relevance and ability to unseat the incumbent President Bola Tinubu. While acknowledging Jonathan’s role in the peaceful transition of power in 2015, the APC emphasizes that Nigeria has moved beyond sentiment and symbolism in its political landscape. The party asserts that the current challenges facing the nation demand bold and forward-thinking leadership, rather than a return to a past that was far from perfect. They argue that “good luck” alone is insufficient as a governance strategy.

The APC criticizes Jonathan’s previous administration (2010-2015), citing issues such as unchecked corruption, insecurity, and economic stagnation. While acknowledging that some may view that period with nostalgia, the party insists that such sentimentality cannot address the pressing issues of economic reform, power generation, insecurity, youth unemployment, and the decaying education sector. They contend that relying on past performance is not a viable platform for future governance. The APC questions the efficacy of nostalgia as a policy platform, emphasizing the need for practical solutions to complex problems rather than relying on romanticized memories of the past. The party asserts that sentimentality cannot effectively address the critical challenges facing the nation, including economic reform, power generation, insecurity, youth unemployment, and the decaying education sector.

The APC also raises concerns about the constitutional and political implications of Jonathan’s potential candidacy. Having served more than one term, his return bid could trigger legal disputes and political instability, distractions Nigeria cannot afford. Further complicating matters is Jonathan’s recent cross-party engagements, including interactions with the APC and his absence from the PDP’s rebuilding efforts, which raise questions about his loyalty, vision, and political intentions. These actions, according to the APC, cast doubt on his commitment to any particular party and his overall political direction. The APC expresses its commitment to consolidating progress, implementing reforms, and engaging the electorate with fresh ideas and credible candidates who reflect the aspirations of a young and dynamic population.

The APC firmly believes that Nigeria’s future lies not in recycled leadership but in visionary governance grounded in integrity, innovation, and resilience. While acknowledging Jonathan’s status as a respected elder statesman and his legacy as a peaceful democrat, the APC distinguishes between legacies and manifestoes, emphasizing that nostalgia cannot substitute for effective governance. They urge Nigerians to reject emotional appeals and prioritize capable, accountable, and transformative leadership. The party advocates for a forward-looking approach, rejecting the notion of resorting to past leaders out of desperation. The APC underscores the importance of choosing leaders based on their ability to address current challenges rather than relying on past achievements or sentimental attachments.

Expanding upon the APC’s concerns regarding Jonathan’s potential candidacy, the party highlights the legal and political complexities that could arise from his having already served a substantial portion of two presidential terms. They argue that his eligibility to run again would likely face legal challenges, potentially leading to prolonged court battles and political uncertainty. Such a scenario, the APC argues, would divert attention and resources away from pressing national issues and further destabilize the political landscape. Furthermore, Jonathan’s recent interactions with the APC, coupled with his disengagement from the PDP’s restructuring efforts, have fueled speculation about his true political allegiances. The APC questions whether Jonathan’s motivations are driven by genuine commitment to national progress or personal political ambition.

The APC reiterates its commitment to moving Nigeria forward with fresh perspectives and dynamic leadership. They emphasize the need for leaders who can inspire innovation, foster economic growth, address security concerns, and improve the lives of all Nigerians. The party contrasts its vision for the future with what they perceive as a backward-looking approach embodied by Jonathan’s potential candidacy. The APC calls on Nigerians to reject the allure of nostalgia and instead embrace a future-oriented vision for the country. They emphasize the importance of electing leaders who can offer concrete solutions to the complex challenges facing the nation, rather than relying on past achievements or sentimental appeals. The APC stresses the need for leadership that embodies integrity, innovation, and resilience in tackling the multifaceted problems confronting Nigeria.
