The inaugural Yucateco World Boxing Council (WBC) Amateur Boxing Championship, a historic event for the African continent, is set to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, from February 6th to 8th, 2024. This landmark tournament, hosted by Yucateco Boxing Promotions in collaboration with Africa’s leading boxing organization, will be held at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall within the Teslim Balogun Stadium. The championship represents a significant step forward in promoting amateur boxing within Africa and offers a platform for talented pugilists to gain international recognition.

The championship will witness the participation of boxers from several African nations, including Kenya, Uganda, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Cameroon, and the host nation, Nigeria. This diverse representation underscores the significance of the event for the development of boxing across the continent. The tournament will not only showcase the skills and talent of African boxers but also foster camaraderie and sporting spirit amongst the participating nations. This cross-cultural exchange is a crucial element of the event, fostering stronger ties within the African boxing community.

Omonlei Imadu, the CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions and President of the Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria, expressed his immense pride in bringing the first-ever WBC amateur tournament to Africa, specifically to his home country. He highlighted the significance of this achievement, emphasizing the dedication and effort invested in making this historic event a reality. Imadu stated that the tournament is more than just a competition; it represents a bridge connecting Africa to the global boxing scene. The presence of high-profile figures like WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán and African Boxing Union President Houcine Houichi further solidifies the importance and international recognition of the championship.

The Yucateco WBC Amateur Boxing Championship holds added significance as a qualifying event for the inaugural WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup, scheduled to be held in Mexico later in 2024. This provides a tremendous opportunity for participating boxers to showcase their abilities on a global stage and potentially earn a place in the World Cup. This pathway to international competition underscores the tournament’s role as a springboard for talented African boxers to achieve greater recognition and pursue their boxing aspirations at the highest level.

The Most Valuable Boxer (MVB) in each weight category, both male and female, will not only secure a spot at the WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup but also be awarded the prestigious WBC Amateur title belt. These belts, symbols of excellence and achievement, are expected to arrive in Nigeria shortly before the tournament commences. This recognition adds considerable prestige to the championship and serves as a powerful motivator for the participating boxers. The opportunity to win a WBC title belt and represent their country at the World Cup provides a compelling incentive for the athletes to perform at their peak.

Saleh Fawaz, founder of Saleh Gloves Promotions, echoed the sentiment of this being a groundbreaking event, marking a new era for amateur boxing development in Africa. Fawaz highlighted the importance of the WBC rankings that participants will receive, further emphasizing the tournament’s value in providing exposure and opportunities for African boxers. He characterized the event as not just a beginning but a foundation for the future of amateur boxing on the continent. This emphasizes the long-term vision and potential impact of the championship beyond the immediate competition, contributing to the sustained growth and development of the sport within Africa.
