The Lagos State Government has launched an initiative to address its ongoing electricity challenges by inviting independent power producers and energy solution firms to submit bids for constructing gas-fired power plants. This initiative, which is part of the Clean Lagos Electricity Market strategy, aims to bolster the state’s power supply through a partnership between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Office of Public-Private Partnerships. The call for bids underscores the urgent need for enhancements to the electrical grid to meet the demands of a rapidly growing metropolitan population that exceeds 20 million.
Lagos is currently experiencing significant energy shortages, with electricity demands exceeding 6GW, while the existing supply from the national grid peaks at less than 2GW. This disparity has created a compelling need for infrastructure improvements in power generation. In response, the Lagos Government is establishing four designated gas-fired power hubs, each designed to accommodate contributions from various firms that can provide a minimum capacity of 100MW. The initiative is a strategic move to tap into private sector expertise and investment potential to alleviate the power deficits that hinder economic and social development.
The proposed gas-fired power plants will be strategically located close to existing distribution company substations, which will facilitate the efficient transmission of electricity generated. Each of the four hubs is expected to have a minimum intended generation capacity of 500MW, enabling the participation of numerous power-generating firms. They highlighted that the establishment of these gas-fired power plants is crucial to bridging the energy gap that has long plagued Lagos.
