The Lagos State Government is spearheading an exciting new initiative with the launch of the inaugural Individual Boxing Club Championship, scheduled to take place from October 21 to 27 at Bishop Aggey Senior Secondary School in Mushin, Lagos. Organized by the Lagos State Sports Commission, this seven-day tournament aims to spotlight emerging boxing talents while encouraging widespread participation among local clubs. Importantly, it serves as a vital preparation platform for boxers as they gear up for forthcoming national competitions, thereby enhancing their competitive edge.
The championship is designed to be inclusive, featuring participation from registered boxing clubs across Lagos State in a total of 25 weight categories—13 for males and 12 for females. Male participants will compete across varying weight classes ranging from 48 kg to 92+ kg, while the female divisions will span from 48 kg to 81+ kg. Each participating coach is allowed to enter one boxer per weight class, ensuring that a wide array of talent can be showcased throughout the competition. This structure highlights the Lagos State government’s commitment to nurturing youth and promoting physical fitness through sport.
According to Lekan Fatodu, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, the initiative aligns directly with the commission’s mission to foster grassroots sports development.
