Liberia’s Power Crisis: A Roadmap to Recovery within 18 Months
Liberia, a nation grappling with persistent power outages, is embarking on an ambitious plan to revitalize its energy sector. Mr. Thomas Z. Gonkerwon, Interim Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at resolving the nationwide electricity deficit within the next 14 to 18 months. This plan hinges on a multifaceted approach, encompassing the expansion of existing hydroelectric capacity, the integration of solar energy, and strategic partnerships with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
The cornerstone of this initiative is the ongoing US$20 million solar plant project, slated for completion in October 2025. This project is expected to significantly augment the nation’s power generation capacity and contribute to a more sustainable energy mix. Furthermore, the LEC is actively pursuing IPP collaborations to establish additional solar plants in strategic locations. These include a 5 MW plant in Bomi, a 150 MW plant in Buchanan, and a substantial 100 MW facility on Bushrod Island. The combined output of these solar projects promises to dramatically improve electricity access across the country.
In addition to these solar initiatives, the LEC is focused on maximizing the potential of the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant. A crucial expansion project is currently underway, which will add four new units to the existing eight. This expansion is designed to enhance the plant’s ability to generate power even during the dry season, a period historically marked by reduced output. The new units are anticipated to significantly increase the plant’s capacity, enabling it to produce 45% of its potential during the dry season and 100% during periods of optimal water flow, effectively doubling its current output.
