The Nasarawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially announced its chairmanship candidates in anticipation of the local government council elections scheduled for November 2. The announcement was made by Mr. Tanimu Adamson, the chairman of the party’s primary elections committee, during a report submission to the party’s state executive on Friday in Lafia. Adamson emphasized that the candidates were chosen through a consensus process, ensuring alignment with the party’s constitutional Article 20, which promotes collective decision-making among stakeholders.
The list of successful chairmanship candidates includes prominent figures representing all 13 local government areas (LGAs) in the state. Among the candidates are Safiyanu Isa for Akwanga, Umar Dan-Akano for Awe, Jonathan Addra for Doma, Abubakar Madaki for Karu, and Adamu Aboki for Keana. Additional candidates include Idris Damagani for Keffi, Bitrus Agbawu for Kokona, Mohammed Ahmed for Nasarawa, Iliya Aliyu for Nasarawa-Eggon, Isa Sani for Obi, Murtala Danmadami for Toto, and Ezekiel Jaga for Wamba. The selection process was thorough and included consultations among party stakeholders as well as the candidates themselves.
Adamson further noted that the consensus approach applied not only to the chairmanship candidates but also to the party’s councillorship candidates across the 147 electoral wards. This unified strategy indicates a concerted effort within the party to present a united front heading into the elections. The significance of reaching consensus is highlighted as a way to build harmony and support among the party’s ranks, minimizing divisions that can arise from competitive primaries.
Upon receiving the report, Aliyu Bello, the APC State Chairman, expressed his gratitude to the committee members for their commitment and for completing their tasks within the set timeframe. Bello acknowledged the high caliber of candidates selected and voiced optimism that their qualifications would enable the APC to claim victories across all local government areas in the upcoming elections. His remarks underscore the party’s strategic focus on ensuring that it fields capable and appealing candidates to the electorate.
Furthermore, it is reported that the APC held a stakeholders’ meeting on October 7, during which they decided to conduct the chairmanship and councillorship primaries on October 14 and 16, respectively. The meeting reaffirmed the consensus method for selecting candidates, illustrating a systematic approach to candidate selection that prioritizes party cohesion. The strategy undertaken by the APC demonstrates a recognition of the political landscape in Nasarawa State, where unity and candidate quality are essential components for success in the forthcoming contest.
The consolidation of candidate selection through consensus reflects the APC’s intent to maintain strong party dynamics and ensure electoral success. By choosing candidates collaboratively, the party aims to engage effectively with constituents and build an effective governance framework in the various local government areas. The groundwork laid during the candidate selection phase could be pivotal in energizing party supporters and addressing local issues more effectively, ultimately aiming for a sweeping victory in the forthcoming local government elections.
