Ayodele Subair, the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), has been honored with the Peak Performer FEST 2024 award for the Most Outstanding Performance as a Public Sector CEO. This recognition underscores Subair’s leadership and commitment to public service, illustrating his role in advancing governmental functions in Lagos. The award ceremony took place in Lagos, marking a gathering of influential figures from both public and private sectors dedicated to celebrating excellence and innovation. The event showcased Subair’s dedication to improving service delivery within the public sector, fueled by transformative initiatives that have gained prominence under his stewardship.

During the event, LIRS itself was recognized with multiple awards, further solidifying its reputation in the public service landscape. Among the accolades received by the agency were ‘Most Outstanding Revenue Collection Agency of the Year,’ ‘Most Outstanding Performance as Women-Friendly Revenue Collection,’ and ‘Most Outstanding Performance in Public Engagement.’ Subair accepted these awards on behalf of LIRS and expressed gratitude towards Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as well as the tax-paying citizens of Lagos. He remarked that such recognition motivates the agency to strive for even higher performance, emphasizing the value of acknowledgment for the hard work being invested in public service.

Subair took the opportunity during his acceptance speech to underscore the critical importance of tax payment in societal development. He pointed out that the amenities and services citizens appreciate, such as good roads, reliable electricity, and public safety, are underpinned by a robust tax system. He highlighted that individuals often do not connect tax contributions to the quality of public services they enjoy. Subair stressed that just like citizens in developed countries, Nigerians also have a role to play by fulfilling their tax obligations, which in turn empowers the government to invest in necessary public infrastructure and services.

The LIRS Chairman acknowledged that tax collection is frequently viewed unfavorably, as no one inherently desires to pay taxes. However, he insisted that fostering consumer engagement and advocacy is essential in promoting a more favorable view of tax compliance. Subair noted that many citizens are not fully aware of the various tax laws and procedures that govern compliance. Therefore, the LIRS has to employ innovative methods and educational campaigns to bridge this knowledge gap, ultimately enhancing the efficiency and transparency of tax obligations and improving public perception of the tax system.

The Peak Performer FEST, convened by Dr. Abiola Salami, seeks to celebrate and appreciate individuals and organizations that make significant contributions in Nigeria. Dr. Salami emphasized that despite the myriad challenges facing the country, there are numerous positive developments happening within its borders. This recognition of excellence among public officials and agencies aims to uplift the narrative surrounding Nigeria, showcasing that progress and innovation are still very much alive within the public sector. The event serves as a reminder that amid difficulties, commitment toward excellence can yield positive outcomes and inspire others within the governance framework.

In summary, Ayodele Subair’s recognition as the Most Outstanding Public Sector CEO at Peak Performer FEST 2024, coupled with the multiple awards received by LIRS, highlights the critical role of effective leadership in public service. His emphasis on tax compliance as a cornerstone for enhancing public services reflects a broader understanding of accountability and governance. With advocacy and innovation at the forefront, there is optimism that the tide may turn in favor of improving public perceptions of taxation and ensuring adequate funding for essential services in Lagos and beyond. This narrative not only offers a glimpse into the successes of public officials but also fosters a sense of collective responsibility among citizens in contributing to the nation’s advancement.
