Super Falcons’ coach Justin Madugu has emphasized his commitment to incorporating players from the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) into the national team as they prepare for an international friendly against France. The friendly, set to take place on November 30, comes just a month after facing Algeria in a two-legged affair in which Madugu showcased several home-based players. The decision to involve more local talent is a response to the recent performances of these players and aims to bolster the team as it gears up for future competitions.

Madugu expressed confidence in the home-based players following their strong performance against Algeria, particularly highlighting the contributions of Edo Queens players Folashade Ijamilusi and Goodness Osigwe, with Ijamilusi netting a hat-trick in Lagos. He noted that the selection of five home-based players for the upcoming match against France could have been larger had Edo Queens not been occupied with the CAF Women’s Champions League. The recognition of these players reflects a broader strategy to tap into local talent and enrich the squad with potential from within Nigeria.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) views the friendly match against France as part of a test phase for the team, which is actively transitioning to integrate newer players ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to be held in Morocco. The tournament, featuring a total of 12 teams, will see the Super Falcons competing in Group B against other teams including Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. This preparatory approach aligns with the national team’s goal to enhance their competitiveness on the international stage.

Madugu’s appointment as head coach by the NFF took place in September, following the absence of the previous coach, Randy Waldrum, due to contractual disagreements. Under Madugu’s leadership, the team successfully navigated the qualifiers for the African tournament, instilling confidence in his management approach and selection criteria. His decision to elevate home-based players into the squad reflects a strategic pivot towards greater inclusivity and grassroots engagement in Nigerian women’s football.

Looking ahead, the integration of NWFL players is pivotal not only for immediate competitive purposes but also for the long-term growth of women’s football in Nigeria. By fostering talent from the local leagues, Madugu hopes to uncover hidden gems who can contribute significantly to the national team’s success. This approach will help to build a more robust pipeline of players who can compete on an international level and ensure the Falcons are well-prepared for upcoming challenges.

The upcoming friendly against France presents an opportunity for Madugu and his squad to gauge their current capabilities against a formidable opponent. With ongoing preparations for major tournaments on the horizon, the team’s performance in this match will serve as a critical assessment point for Madugu, enabling him to refine player selections and strategies. The injection of talented home-based players aligns with broader objectives to elevate the standard of the national team and achieve greater success in international competitions.
