Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to advancing education both within the state and internationally. Recognizing education as a cornerstone of his government’s agenda, Makinde emphasized the ongoing efforts to enhance primary, secondary, and tertiary education while also acknowledging the crucial role of foreign education in driving economic expansion and development within the state. The governor’s stance was articulated at the second International Study Abroad Fair (ISAF) 2025, themed “Global Mastery, Local Impact: Empowering Minds Through International Education,” held at the University of Ibadan. He underscored the importance of translating global educational experiences into tangible local contributions.

Makinde, represented by his Chief of Staff, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, delivered the keynote address, “Harnessing International Education Experience for Local Economic Development.” He highlighted the multifaceted benefits of international education, extending beyond simply obtaining a degree. He stressed the acquisition of new perspectives, advanced skills, and the cultivation of international networks as critical components of studying abroad. Crucially, the governor emphasized the importance of returning home to apply these acquired skills and contribute to the development of Nigeria, particularly Oyo State, promoting a “Japada” mentality as opposed to the prevalent “Japa” syndrome of emigration without the intention of return.

The governor’s commitment to education was further reinforced by his pledge to collaborate with international investors in the education sector, creating opportunities for partnerships and increased investment. He underscored the government’s active role in sponsoring students for both local and international education, citing the 100 scholarships awarded through ISAF for studies in Malaysia. This concrete example highlights the government’s commitment to investing in human capital and fostering global competencies among Oyo State residents.

The International Study Abroad Fair itself proved to be a significant platform for facilitating international educational opportunities. Lady Tolu Eledan, Managing Director of TPSEAL Education, UK, and host of ISAF, reported the success of the previous year’s fair, ISAF 24, which facilitated 100 fully-funded postgraduate scholarships internationally, valued at approximately $1 million. These scholarships represent a substantial investment in the future of Oyo State students and underscore the potential of international education to transform lives and contribute to local development.

Prominent figures from various sectors also contributed to the discourse on international education at ISAF ’25. Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, lauded the event’s focus on empowering youth through international exposure and affirmed the state government’s dedication to education, as evidenced by the allocation of ₦145.25 billion, representing 21.44% of the total budget, to the education sector. Plans for the renovation of over 100 secondary schools further demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure.

Dr. Debo Akande, Executive Adviser to the Governor on Agribusiness and Director-General of OYSADA, shared his personal experience of how studying abroad shaped his career trajectory, advocating for technical and vocational education training as a viable pathway to success. Dr. Ng Miew Luan, an Associate Professor at INTI International University of Malaysia, emphasized the transformative power of international education experiences to reshape communities and nations. Several other dignitaries, including the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan and representatives from prominent media and financial institutions, echoed the call for leveraging international education to acquire global knowledge and apply it to local innovation and development. The event’s closing remarks reinforced the “Japada” concept, encouraging beneficiaries of international education to return and contribute to their home communities.
