The Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, is set to celebrate a momentous occasion, its 15th combined convocation ceremony, a landmark event marking the institution’s first convocation since 2015. This grand ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, June 24th, will witness the graduation of over 51,000 students, encompassing nine academic sessions from 2015/2016 to 2023/2024. The convocation serves as a testament to the polytechnic’s renewed commitment to academic progress and its dedication to nurturing future generations of skilled professionals. Dr. Babatunde Jolaosho, the Rector of MAPOLY, unveiled these details during a press briefing, highlighting the significance of the event and the institution’s strides toward reclaiming its position as a leading center of technological education.

This convocation signifies a new chapter for MAPOLY, bridging a significant gap in its history and reaffirming its commitment to academic continuity. The impressive number of graduands, exceeding 51,000, reflects the polytechnic’s enduring appeal and its capacity to provide quality education to a large and diverse student body. Both full-time and part-time students across various schools and departments will be awarded National Diplomas (ND) and Higher National Diplomas (HND), representing the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. This momentous occasion will also see the conferment of fellowship awards upon distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to society, including former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, and the Seriki of Egba land, Chief Tosin Owolabi Fadare.

Adding further prestige to the event, the convocation lecture will be delivered by Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission. The lecture, themed “Diaspora Perspective And The Influence of STEM In The Globalised World of Today,” promises to be an insightful exploration of the intersection between global perspectives, STEM education, and the evolving landscape of technological advancement. Dr. Dabiri-Erewa’s presence underscores the importance of the diaspora community and its potential to contribute to the development of Nigeria’s educational and technological sectors.

Dr. Jolaosho, in his address, emphasized the institution’s commitment to rebranding and repositioning itself as a citadel of excellence in technological education. He outlined the various initiatives undertaken by his administration since assuming office six months prior, highlighting the restoration of staff and student confidence, infrastructural renewal, improvement of the academic calendar, and engagement with industry and alumni for institutional support. These efforts demonstrate a proactive approach towards enhancing the quality of education and ensuring the polytechnic’s continued relevance in a rapidly changing world.

The rector further assured the public that regular convocations will now be the norm at MAPOLY, signaling a return to normalcy and a commitment to upholding academic best practices. The normalization of the academic calendar is a crucial step towards ensuring that students can progress through their studies in a timely and efficient manner, contributing to the overall effectiveness and reputation of the institution. This renewed focus on structure and organization reflects the administration’s commitment to providing a stable and conducive learning environment.

The success of this convocation and the positive trajectory of MAPOLY are attributed to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, and the Governing Council of the institution. Their leadership, support, and commitment to providing an enabling environment have been instrumental in driving the polytechnic’s transformation and paving the way for its continued growth and development. This collaborative approach underscores the importance of partnerships between government, educational institutions, and the wider community in fostering academic excellence and promoting societal progress. The convocation ceremony serves as a celebration of the collective efforts that have brought MAPOLY to this milestone and a beacon of hope for its future endeavors.
