The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Thank You Tour in Berekum, Bono Region, on April 28, 2025, intended to foster unity and gratitude following the 2024 elections, instead became the stage for a public clash between two prominent figures within the party: Kennedy Agyapong, the former Assin Central MP and flagbearer aspirant, and Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman. The confrontation exposed underlying tensions and highlighted the potential for internal divisions to undermine the party’s cohesion.

The incident began with Abronye addressing the assembled crowd. His remarks, seemingly directed at Agyapong, criticized individuals within the party who engaged in divisive rhetoric, accusing them of undermining unity while subsequently advocating for peace. Abronye’s words resonated with the audience, many of whom viewed them as a direct reference to Agyapong’s conduct during the highly contested NPP flagbearer race. This perceived slight triggered a swift and indignant response from Agyapong.

Agyapong, known for his outspoken nature, retaliated with a dismissive remark challenging Abronye’s standing and implying his audacity to question him. He further escalated the confrontation by suggesting that the political arena allows individuals of lesser means to challenge his authority. This pointed comment reflected the simmering tensions between the two figures and hinted at a deeper power struggle within the party structure. Agyapong’s aggressive stance underscored his refusal to be silenced or censured, further exacerbating the already charged atmosphere.

Continuing his tirade, Agyapong issued a stern warning to the NPP, emphasizing his own perceived dominance within the party ranks. He threatened a “showdown,” asserting his unmatched political prowess. This bold proclamation not only underscored his confidence but also served as a veiled threat, suggesting potential repercussions if the party failed to heed his warnings. This public display of defiance exposed the fragile state of internal party dynamics and raised concerns about the potential for further conflict.

Agyapong then expanded his criticism to include the entire Bono regional executive body, holding them accountable for the NPP’s disappointing performance in the region during the 2024 elections, where they lost several parliamentary seats to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). This direct accusation highlighted the existing discontent within the party regarding the election outcome and suggested Agyapong’s willingness to publicly challenge the leadership’s competence. By holding specific individuals responsible for the electoral setbacks, he further fueled internal dissent and contributed to the escalating tension.

The public nature of this confrontation between Agyapong and Abronye served as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the NPP. The incident raised concerns among party members about the detrimental impact of internal divisions on the party’s image and its ability to present a united front. The clash exposed the underlying power struggles and personal animosities that could potentially derail the party’s efforts to rebuild and regroup following the 2024 election cycle. The incident underscored the need for effective conflict resolution and a renewed focus on party unity to address the challenges ahead. The fallout from this public confrontation could have far-reaching consequences, potentially influencing future leadership decisions and shaping the party’s overall trajectory.
