The Nigerian Airspace Management Authority (NAMA) is undertaking a significant modernization effort to enhance its air-ground communication infrastructure. A delegation led by Managing Director Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar recently visited the Rhode and Schwarz factory in Germany to assess the facility and explore the procurement of critical communication equipment. This visit underscores NAMA’s commitment to acquiring state-of-the-art technology to improve the safety and efficiency of Nigerian airspace.
The focal point of NAMA’s interest is the Rhode and Schwarz High-Frequency (HF) transceiver, a cutting-edge communication system boasting advanced signal processing algorithms. These algorithms significantly reduce noise interference, a common challenge in traditional HF systems. This technological advancement promises to substantially bolster long-range air-to-ground communication across Nigerian airspace, addressing the range limitations of existing Very High Frequency (VHF) systems.
The anticipated acquisition of the HF transceivers is poised to revolutionize air traffic communication over vast geographical areas. The new system is expected to provide reliable coverage over the Gulf of Guinea, extending deep into the Atlantic Ocean, and across the northern desert regions beyond the Kano Flight Information Region. This extended reach will significantly enhance communication with aircraft operating in these areas, ensuring consistent and dependable contact between pilots and ground control.
