The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has vehemently refuted allegations of political hijacking, particularly claims involving Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu. These accusations were levelled by Henry Okunomu, who falsely claimed to be a former Senate President of NANS. The student body, in a statement issued by its National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Ajasa, categorically denied Okunomu’s claims, labelling them as baseless fabrications aimed at tarnishing the organization’s image. NANS clarified that Okunomu had never held any leadership position within the association and cautioned the public and media against being misled by such impostors.

Okunomu’s allegations, aired on Channels Television, centered on the increasing influence of political figures in NANS, suggesting that the organization had deviated from its core mission of student advocacy and succumbed to political patronage. He specifically pointed fingers at Seyi Tinubu, accusing him of meddling in NANS’ internal affairs. Okunomu questioned Tinubu’s motives and the potential benefits he sought from his involvement with the student union. However, NANS swiftly countered these claims, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to student welfare and its independence from political influence.

NANS reiterated its established leadership selection process, which involves rigorous screening and adherence to constitutional protocols. The association dismissed suggestions that financial contributions could circumvent these procedures as not only untrue but also deeply offensive. NANS unequivocally affirmed Comrade Olushola Oladoja as its legitimate and duly elected President, dismissing any claims to the contrary.

The student body underscored its historical stance against policies detrimental to students’ interests, regardless of the political affiliations of those involved. This, NANS argued, demonstrates its commitment to serving as a genuine voice for Nigerian students, uninfluenced by external political pressures. NANS warned against any attempts to exploit the association’s name for political manipulation or blackmail. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in its operations.

NANS’s robust response aimed to dispel doubts about its integrity and independence. The association vehemently denied being a tool for any political party, government, or individual politician. It emphasized its dedication to upholding the principles of student advocacy and representing the best interests of Nigerian students. The organization’s clear and forceful statement sought to reassure the public and its members of its continued commitment to its core mission.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by student organizations in navigating the complex political landscape while maintaining their autonomy. NANS’s swift and decisive response underscores its determination to protect its integrity and remain a credible voice for Nigerian students. The association’s commitment to transparency and its established procedures serve as safeguards against undue political influence and ensure that its actions reflect the genuine needs and aspirations of the student population it represents.
