The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State has elected Adamu Bako as its new chairman during a congress held in Lafia, the state capital. The election, organized by Senator Simon Mwadkwon, chairman of the PDP National Committee overseeing the congress, was characterized by a commendable level of fairness and transparency. Bako secured a significant victory, receiving 1,403 votes against his opponent, Matthew John, who garnered only seven votes, with four invalid votes recorded. Senator Mwadkwon emphasized the need for unity among party members following this election, underscoring that the PDP operates as a collective family rather than focusing on individual victories or defeats.

In addition to Bako’s election, the congress saw the appointment of various other key party officials. Keffas Danlami was elected as Secretary, Yahaya Bunu as Treasurer, Chinenege Muhammed as State Publicity Secretary, and Hanatu John as State Women Leader. Moreover, Bala Aron was designated as the State Legal Adviser, while Awesu Abdullahi took on the role of State Auditor. Vice-Chairpersons for the party’s three senatorial zones were also elected, further solidifying a leadership structure aimed at enhancing the party’s performance in future electoral contests.

In his inaugural speech, newly elected chairman Adamu Bako expressed his gratitude to the party’s members for their unity and active participation in the electoral process. He emphasized a collective commitment to moving the PDP to greater heights, focusing on cohesion and the strengthening of the party’s infrastructure in anticipation of the upcoming 2027 general elections. Bako reassured members of his dedication to addressing the concerns of any aggrieved individuals within the party, pledging to foster a sense of family and collaboration moving forward.

The conduct of the congress was praised not only by Senator Mwadkwon but also by Emmanuel Ombugadu, the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate for Nasarawa State. Ombugadu lauded the process as free and fair, highlighting the significance of transparency in party elections for legitimacy and member confidence. The successful conduct of the congress is expected to serve as a foundation for revitalizing the party and enhancing its competitiveness in forthcoming electoral challenges.

As the newly elected leaders take office, they are tasked with implementing strategies aimed at increasing the PDP’s visibility and influence throughout Nasarawa State. This includes reaching out to discontented members and working diligently to unify the party’s efforts in the lead-up to the next general elections. The priority will be to safeguard party integrity and foster an atmosphere of inclusivity, ensuring every member feels valued and engaged in the decision-making processes that affect the party’s future.

In conclusion, the PDP’s recent congress and the election of Adamu Bako mark a crucial turning point for the party in Nasarawa State. With a committed leadership team in place, there is a collective focus on revitalizing the party, enhancing cohesion, and preparing for the challenges of the 2027 elections. The emphasis on unity and collaboration, as articulated by both Bako and other party leaders, sets a positive tone for the PDP’s future and its ongoing efforts to serve the interests of the people within the state. As the party moves forward, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and addressing the concerns of its members will be essential for achieving sustained success.
