The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) recently elected a new leadership team during its National Convention held in Ganta, Nimba County, marking a significant transition within the organization. The newly elected president, Cllr. Varmah M. Bornor, who previously served as the National Secretary General, replaces Cllr. Sylvester Rennie. This election took place on November 30, 2024, at the Peace Empire Guest House, specifically within the Wuo-Garbe Tarpia Intellectual Hall. The convention, which spanned from November 28 to December 1, 2024, gathered a diverse spectrum of legal professionals and partners, both local and international, highlighting the ongoing commitment to the rule of law and justice in Liberia.
The election process unfolded smoothly, demonstrating the integrity of the LNBA’s electoral system. Cllr. Bonor secured a resounding victory with 309 out of 447 valid votes, showcasing a strong mandate from his peers. Other presidential candidates, Cllr. Preston Chea Doe and Cllr. Wiefueh A. Sayeh, garnered 23 and 115 votes, respectively. This electoral event, supported by international partners such as the U.S. Government, UNDP, and Arish Aid, reinforced the Bar’s mission to advance alternative dispute resolution methods and pro bono legal services across the nation. The LNBA’s commitment to improving legal standards and accessibility in Liberia remains steadfast.
As part of the election, the voting outcomes reflected a competitive yet respectful atmosphere among the candidates. For the vice-presidential position, Cllr. Juah F. Lawson received the highest number of votes at 191, while Cllr. Evelyn Lah-Gongloe obtained 108 votes. The Secretary-General race was closely contested, with Cllr. Elijah T. Forkeyah narrowly winning over Cllr. Fredrick M. Gbemie, receiving 228 votes to Gbemie’s 220. The contest for National Treasurer saw Atty. Yemi Shobayo-Williams emerge victorious with 269 votes against Atty. Yaney K. Horton, who received 174 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Cllr. Bonor expressed deep gratitude for the trust bestowed upon him and emphasized his commitment to working collaboratively with the national government, international organizations, and local entities to bolster legal frameworks and access to justice in Liberia.
