The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly rejected the expulsion of Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, from the party. The expulsion, purportedly carried out by the Umuopia/Umukegwu ward chapter of the party in Imo State, was declared null and void by the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC). The NWC cited a clear violation of the party’s constitution, specifically Sections 57(7) and 59(3) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), which explicitly reserves the authority to discipline National Assembly members to the National Executive Committee (NEC).
The expulsion attempt stemmed from accusations of gross indiscipline, insubordination, and anti-party activities leveled against Ugochinyere, who also serves as the spokesman for the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). The Imo State chapter of the PDP had announced the expulsion, citing a letter purportedly signed by local party officials. However, the NWC swiftly intervened, asserting its exclusive jurisdiction over disciplinary matters concerning National Assembly members and emphasizing that no lower-level party organ, whether ward, local government, or state chapter, possesses the power to expel or discipline a federal legislator.
The PDP’s national leadership underscored the importance of adhering to the party’s established rules and procedures. The NWC emphasized that the PDP operates as a structured organization governed by its constitution and regulations, and it will not tolerate any breach of these rules by any individual or group, regardless of their position within the party. The statement unequivocally affirmed Ugochinyere’s continued membership in the PDP, emphasizing his retention of all rights, privileges, and obligations associated with party membership.
The NWC’s intervention not only reinforces the authority of the national body but also serves as a clear message to all party members about the importance of respecting the party’s constitution. The statement called for unity within the Imo State chapter of the PDP and urged all members to work together in the best interests of the party and the people. This decisive action by the NWC effectively nullifies the attempted expulsion and underscores the principle of due process within the party’s internal disciplinary mechanisms.
This incident highlights the tension that can sometimes exist between different levels within a political party structure. The attempt by a local chapter to expel a national legislator underscores the importance of clear lines of authority and well-defined procedures within a political party. The NWC’s swift response serves to reaffirm the supremacy of the national body in matters of discipline concerning national-level elected officials.
Furthermore, the NWC’s emphasis on unity and adherence to the party’s constitution serves as a reminder of the importance of internal cohesion, particularly in the lead-up to elections. By swiftly addressing this issue and reaffirming Ugochinyere’s membership, the PDP aims to project an image of stability and order, crucial for maintaining public trust and attracting support. This decisive action by the NWC underscores its commitment to upholding the party’s rules and ensuring a fair and transparent internal process for addressing disciplinary matters.
