The Nigeria-Britain Association (N-BA), a vital bridge connecting Nigeria and the United Kingdom, recently convened its 56th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations. The AGM served as a platform to celebrate past achievements, strategize for the future, and solidify partnerships that will further enhance collaboration between the two nations. The event brought together members from both countries, signifying the shared dedication to nurturing a vibrant and mutually beneficial relationship. The atmosphere was charged with optimism and a shared vision of a future where the Nigeria-UK bond continues to flourish.

The past year proved to be a fruitful one for the N-BA, marked by several significant milestones. President Sola Oyetayo highlighted key achievements, including the successful hosting of the Independence Day celebration in London, a testament to the enduring cultural connections between the two countries. The Presidential Cocktail reception further cemented diplomatic ties, providing a platform for networking and fostering stronger relationships. The Akintola Williams Youth Debate Competition, a flagship event of the Association, showcased the intellectual prowess and critical thinking abilities of young Nigerians, underscoring the importance of investing in future generations. Finally, the Annual Lecture Series offered insightful discussions on pertinent issues affecting both nations.

The AGM also served as a poignant moment to pay tribute to the late Akintola Williams, a founding father and patron of the N-BA. His invaluable contributions to the Association’s growth and credibility were acknowledged with profound respect. In a move symbolizing continuity and renewed commitment, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, was appointed as the new Patron, while the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery CMG, assumed the role of Vice Patron. These appointments reflect the high esteem in which the N-BA is held and the significance both countries place on the relationship. Chief Olabintan Famutimi and Philip Hall OBE continue their service as Vice Patrons, their roles symbolizing the enduring commitment to strengthening Nigeria-UK ties.

A defining moment of the AGM was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the British Council, a prominent cultural and educational organization. This strategic partnership aims to facilitate mutual access to programs and events, creating a unique platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing. A key component of the MoU is the provision of internship opportunities for winners of the Akintola Williams Youth Debate Competition, providing invaluable real-world experience and fostering the development of future leaders. This collaboration underscores the commitment of both organizations to empowering youth and investing in the next generation of professionals.

The N-BA further expanded its network of partnerships by forging an agreement with ORÍKÌ, a prominent beauty and wellness brand. This partnership offers tangible benefits to N-BA members, providing exclusive discounts and access to ORÍKÌ’s range of products. This collaboration not only enhances the membership experience but also demonstrates the Association’s commitment to providing value to its members. The expansion of partnerships and opportunities underscores the dynamism and forward-thinking approach of the N-BA.

The AGM also witnessed the election of officers for the 2025/2026 tenure, ensuring the continued leadership and direction of the Association. Sola Oyetayo was re-elected as President, a testament to his effective leadership and vision for the N-BA. Tobi Asehinde was re-elected as Honorary Secretary, ensuring continuity and stability in the Association’s operations. In his acceptance speech, President Oyetayo expressed his gratitude for the renewed mandate and reiterated his commitment to building on the legacy of “The Big I.D.E.A.” – Inclusivity, Diversity, Empowerment, and Agility. This framework serves as the guiding principle for the N-BA, emphasizing the importance of fostering an inclusive environment that embraces diversity, empowers individuals, and promotes agility in adapting to a rapidly changing world. He pledged to further strengthen the ties between Nigeria, the UK, and the wider Commonwealth through friendship, cultural exchange, and mutual development.
