The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bono Region of Ghana has vehemently denounced the surge in lawlessness, raiding, and looting of state properties following the general elections. The party’s regional communication officer, Charles Akowuah, categorically denied any NDC involvement in these acts, emphasizing the party’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and condemning the criminal behavior. He addressed a press conference in Sunyani to counter what he termed “false narratives” circulating in the media that implicated the NDC in the looting, asserting that such claims were not only unfounded but also aimed at tarnishing the party’s image. Instead, Mr. Akowuah pointed fingers at certain government appointees within the region, alleging their potential complicity in the plunder of state assets. He expressed deep concern over these actions, describing them as a deliberate attempt to deprive the people of Bono Region of crucial resources.
Mr. Akowuah’s condemnation of the looting went beyond mere rhetoric. He underscored the gravity of the situation by highlighting the detrimental impact of such actions on the region’s development and the well-being of its citizens. He argued that the loss of public resources through theft and vandalism would impede progress and hinder the provision of essential services to the community. The NDC’s regional communication officer framed the alleged looting not just as isolated criminal incidents but as a calculated scheme to undermine the region’s development and deny its people the benefits of public investments. He called for swift action to address the issue and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Further bolstering his accusations, Mr. Akowuah cited a specific incident involving the theft of iron rods intended for the construction of the Agenda III District Hospital at Odomase in the Sunyani West Municipality. He detailed the interception of a vehicle, identified as an ASTRA DAF with registration number GN 7469-17 and bearing the logo of CONSAR Limited, which was loaded with the stolen iron rods. This specific case, according to Mr. Akowuah, served as concrete evidence of the ongoing looting and highlighted the audacity of those involved. He urged the police to intensify their efforts to protect state properties and government assets, prevent further looting, and apprehend the culprits involved in the theft.
While calling for law enforcement intervention, the NDC regional communication officer simultaneously appealed to NDC supporters to exercise restraint and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He emphasized the importance of allowing due process to take its course and allowing the police to investigate and handle the situation. Mr. Akowuah stressed that resorting to vigilante justice would only exacerbate the problem and create further chaos and instability. He reiterated the NDC’s commitment to peaceful and lawful means of addressing grievances and protecting public property.
Beyond addressing NDC supporters, Mr. Akowuah extended his call for vigilance to the general public. He encouraged citizens to remain watchful and report any suspected instances of misuse or theft of public property to the police. He stressed the importance of community involvement in safeguarding public resources and ensuring accountability. By encouraging public participation in reporting such incidents, Mr. Akowuah aimed to create a collective responsibility for protecting public assets and deterring further criminal activity. He framed this public vigilance as crucial in the fight against corruption and the misuse of public funds.
Finally, Mr. Akowuah issued a stern warning to NPP government appointees in the region, urging them to desist from any attempts to loot or misuse state properties as the nation prepared for the transition of political power in January 2025. He emphasized that such actions were not only illegal and morally reprehensible but also detrimental to the region’s development and the well-being of its citizens. His warning underscored the NDC’s commitment to holding those in power accountable for their actions and ensuring a smooth and transparent transition of power. He implied that the NDC would be vigilant in monitoring the situation and would not hesitate to expose and pursue legal action against any individuals found to be involved in the looting or misuse of public resources.
