The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reinforced its commitment to regional security by donating a substantial array of communication equipment to the Rivers State Police Command. This donation, which includes repeaters, base sets, walkie-talkies, and a rehabilitated mast, aims to significantly bolster the police force’s capacity to combat crime and maintain peace throughout the state. The initiative underscores the NDDC’s recognition of the vital link between security and development, emphasizing that peace is a prerequisite for progress in the Niger Delta region. By empowering law enforcement with enhanced communication capabilities, the NDDC seeks to create a more secure environment conducive to development initiatives.
This contribution is not an isolated incident but rather a continuation of the NDDC’s ongoing partnership with security agencies in the Niger Delta. The donation was prompted by a request from the former Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, who recognized the critical role of effective communication in policing. The NDDC’s swift response to this request highlights the organization’s responsiveness to the needs of law enforcement and its dedication to fostering collaboration in the pursuit of regional security. The agency further pledged continued support to the police, signifying a long-term commitment to strengthening security infrastructure in the region.
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the NDDC, personally presented the communication equipment to the police command in Port Harcourt, emphasizing the significance of the donation in addressing the challenges of crime and insecurity. He noted that the absence of peace hinders development, making security a crucial area of focus for the interventionist agency. Ogbuku commended the police force for their diligent efforts in maintaining peace and order, particularly during the traditionally volatile “ember months” period. He acknowledged their dedication and sacrifice, recognizing the inherent risks they face in protecting the community, and stressed that supporting their work is paramount.
The timing of the donation is particularly noteworthy, coinciding with a period typically associated with a surge in crime rates. Ogbuku acknowledged that, contrary to this trend, crime rates had remained relatively stable, attributing this positive outcome to the effectiveness of the police force. He viewed the donation as a timely intervention that would further enhance the police’s operational capabilities and consolidate the gains made in crime reduction. The NDDC’s proactive approach to security underscores its understanding of the intricate relationship between security, stability, and development.
The NDDC’s commitment extends beyond the immediate donation of communication equipment. Ogbuku revealed plans to provide Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras to police commands across the Niger Delta region, mirroring similar support provided to the Department of State Services (DSS). This initiative aims to create a more comprehensive security network by enhancing surveillance capabilities and improving situational awareness for law enforcement. Furthermore, Ogbuku emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration and intelligence sharing, recognizing that a unified approach is crucial for effectively combating crime and maintaining security.
The Rivers State Police Command expressed deep gratitude for the NDDC’s contribution, recognizing the significant boost it provides to their operational effectiveness. Commissioner of Police Mustapha Mohammed, represented by Deputy Commissioner Samuel Erale, highlighted the positive impact of the donated equipment, stating that it has significantly expanded communication coverage across the state, facilitating better coordination and monitoring of criminal activities. This enhanced communication network represents a substantial step forward in improving the command’s ability to respond to security threats and maintain order. The command also acknowledged past support from the NDDC, including the provision of residential quarters, barracks, and vehicles, further illustrating the long-standing partnership between the two organizations. Former Commissioner Disu, who initiated the request, expressed his appreciation for the NDDC’s commitment, underscoring the crucial role of communication in effective policing. His gratitude reflects the tangible impact of the donation on the ground and reinforces the importance of partnerships between development agencies and law enforcement in addressing complex security challenges.
