The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Bauchi State has intensified its fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, reporting significant progress in the first half of 2025. From January to June, the command arrested 127 suspected drug offenders, comprising 118 males and nine females. The agency’s efforts also led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, totaling 1,205.174 kilograms. This haul included 874.585 kilograms of cannabis sativa, 330.588 kilograms of psychotropic substances, and a small quantity of methamphetamine, commonly known as ice. The NDLEA’s successful operations resulted in 28 convictions, with another 18 cases pending in court. Furthermore, demonstrating a commitment to rehabilitation, the command provided counseling and support to 32 drug users, primarily through brief intervention programs. These figures underscore the NDLEA’s proactive approach to combating the drug menace in Bauchi State.

The NDLEA’s achievements in Bauchi State coincide with the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking, observed annually on June 26th. This year’s theme, “The evidence is clear. Invest in prevention, break the cycle,” resonates deeply with the agency’s efforts to address the root causes of drug-related problems. The NDLEA acknowledges the devastating global impact of the illicit drug trade, recognizing its role in fueling violence, organized crime, and public health crises. The agency emphasizes the urgent need for a multifaceted approach to tackling this challenge, highlighting prevention as a cornerstone of its strategy.

The NDLEA’s Commander in Bauchi State, Ali Aminu, stressed the evolving nature of the drug threat, noting that criminal networks are increasingly trafficking more potent and dangerous substances, preying on vulnerable populations, particularly women and youth. This underscores the need for adaptive strategies and increased investment in preventative measures. The “War Against Drug Abuse (WADA)” program, spearheaded by the NDLEA, reflects this commitment to proactive intervention. Aminu emphasized that education, sensitization, and awareness campaigns are crucial for disseminating accurate information about the risks associated with drug use and trafficking.

Aminu further emphasized that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking requires a collective effort. He called upon individuals, state governments, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, religious bodies, and other security agencies to join forces with the NDLEA. This collaborative approach, he argued, is essential for creating a united front against drug-related harm. By sharing information and raising awareness within communities, the NDLEA aims to create a ripple effect that empowers individuals to make informed choices and resist the allure of drugs. This collaborative strategy acknowledges that the agency cannot single-handedly win the war against drugs.

The Bauchi State Commander commended the NDLEA’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retired), for his leadership in revitalizing the agency and instilling a renewed sense of purpose among its personnel. He attributed the agency’s recent successes to the invigorated commitment of its staff in combatting drug abuse and trafficking. This renewed focus, Aminu believes, is instrumental in effectively addressing the complex challenges posed by the drug trade. The Commander’s remarks highlight the importance of strong leadership and a motivated workforce in achieving the agency’s objectives.

Finally, Aminu delivered a stern warning to drug users and dealers, cautioning them to avoid Bauchi State or face the full force of the law. This unambiguous message underscores the NDLEA’s unwavering commitment to upholding the law and holding those involved in drug-related activities accountable. The Commander’s warning serves as a deterrent and reinforces the agency’s resolve to create a drug-free environment in Bauchi State. The combined efforts of arrests, seizures, convictions, rehabilitation, prevention, and inter-agency collaboration underscore the NDLEA’s comprehensive and resolute approach to tackling the drug challenge in the region.
