Newmont’s Akyem Mine has demonstrated its commitment to community development and sustainable growth by donating essential educational resources to schools in its host communities. Recognizing the transformative power of education, Newmont aims to empower future generations and contribute to the overall socioeconomic progress of the Birim North District. This donation, comprising a diverse range of learning materials, underscores Newmont’s dedication to fostering a brighter future for the youth in these communities.

The donation included a comprehensive selection of educational items tailored to support learning across various subjects. Three boxes filled with Science, Math, and English textbooks were provided to equip students with foundational knowledge in these core areas. To further encourage reading and literacy development, 110 novels were included in the donation, offering students opportunities to explore different worlds and expand their vocabulary. Recognizing the practical needs of students, 450 school bags and 14 boxes of notepads were also provided, ensuring they have the necessary tools to succeed in their studies. These materials were distributed to two host communities – the Yayaaso D/A Model School and New Abirem Afosu Senior High School, as well as the Abohema Methodist School, located in a near-mine community.

Derek Boateng, Senior Manager, Sustainability and External Relations at Newmont Akyem, emphasized the significance of the donation and the company’s broader commitment to investing in education as a catalyst for human capital development within the mine’s host communities. He expressed the hope that this donation would empower students and enhance their learning journey, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the future.

Newmont’s support for education in the Birim North District extends far beyond this recent donation. For over a decade, the company has consistently invested in educational initiatives, underscoring its long-term commitment to community development. Through the Newmont Foundation, the company has awarded over 6,000 educational scholarships as of 2024, enabling students to pursue higher education in diverse fields such as mining engineering, health and allied sciences, and social sciences. This comprehensive approach to educational support aims to equip individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute to the sustainable development of their communities and beyond.

Furthermore, Newmont has established a vocational institute to provide free training to over 300 youth in its host communities. This institute offers practical training in various vocational trades, including welding and fabrication, general electricals, plumbing, masonry, and building construction. By equipping young people with valuable technical skills, Newmont is empowering them to secure meaningful employment opportunities and contribute to the economic growth of their communities. This initiative aligns with Newmont’s broader commitment to fostering sustainable development and creating shared value for all stakeholders.

Newmont’s community initiatives are strategically designed to promote sustainable development and cultivate respectful engagement with local communities. The company recognizes that investing in education, health, and economic empowerment is essential for creating a thriving and resilient community. By providing educational resources, scholarships, and vocational training opportunities, Newmont is not only empowering individuals but also fostering a more prosperous and equitable future for the entire Birim North District.
