The National Insurance Commission (NIC) and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) have forged a strategic partnership to address the interconnected challenges of youth unemployment and low insurance penetration in Ghana. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to train and employ 500 young Ghanaians within the insurance industry. The initiative, a crucial step towards enhancing financial inclusion and creating job opportunities, underscores the commitment of both organizations to empower the youth and expand insurance coverage across the country. This partnership leverages the strengths of both agencies, with YEA focusing on youth employment and skills development, and NIC providing the regulatory framework and industry expertise for a robust and sustainable insurance sector.

The MoU signing ceremony, held at the YEA Head Office in Accra, signifies the official commencement of this transformative initiative. Hon. Malik Basintale, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the YEA, emphasized the pressing need for greater access to insurance services, particularly in remote communities. He highlighted the significant gap in insurance penetration, primarily attributed to a shortage of qualified insurance professionals to serve these underserved populations. This initiative, he explained, directly addresses this issue by creating a pipeline of trained professionals who can effectively reach these communities and promote financial literacy and insurance uptake. The YEA’s partnership with the NIC and the Ghana Insurance College ensures that these young individuals receive the necessary training and qualifications to excel in the insurance industry, ultimately contributing to wider economic growth and stability.

Dr. Abiba Zakariah, Acting Commissioner of Insurance, echoed the importance of this collaborative effort, expressing the NIC’s full commitment to supporting the initiative’s successful implementation. She emphasized the timeliness of the partnership, highlighting the vital role it plays in building a robust and inclusive insurance sector. The NIC’s participation ensures that the training program aligns with industry standards and regulations, equipping the youth with practical skills and knowledge relevant to the current market demands.
