Nigeria’s U-18 men’s handball team embarked on a challenging journey in the IHF Trophy’s Intercontinental Phase, held in Pristina, Kosovo, ultimately securing a commendable second-place finish. Their campaign, marked by both triumphs and setbacks, culminated in a hard-fought final against the host nation, Kosovo. Despite displaying resilience and determination, the Nigerian team fell short in a thrilling overtime battle, succumbing to a 34-30 defeat.

The final match was a rematch of an earlier encounter between Nigeria and Kosovo during the preliminary stage, which Kosovo had won. Determined to avenge their previous loss, the Nigerian team entered the final with renewed vigor. The first half unfolded as a tightly contested affair, with both teams exhibiting strong defensive prowess. Nigeria’s offensive efforts, however, proved effective in countering Kosovo’s defensive strategies, resulting in a 13-13 stalemate at halftime.

The second half witnessed a surge in Nigeria’s performance, as they managed to outscore their hosts and establish a seemingly comfortable 26-24 lead with less than three minutes remaining. The dynamic duo of Christian Foloki and Mustapha Mohammed spearheaded Nigeria’s attack, combining for an impressive 13 goals. However, Kosovo, fueled by the fervent support of their home crowd, mounted a dramatic comeback in the dying moments of regulation time, scoring two crucial goals to level the score at 26-26 and force the match into overtime.

The overtime period belonged to Kosovo, who capitalized on their home advantage and the momentum gained from their late resurgence. Energized by their enthusiastic fans, Kosovo dominated the extra time, outscoring Nigeria and sealing a 34-30 victory. This triumph secured Kosovo the championship title of the IHF Trophy’s Intercontinental Phase, leaving Nigeria to settle for a second-place finish.

Despite the final setback, Nigeria’s performance throughout the tournament showcased their potential and resilience. Mustapha Mohammed, in particular, emerged as a standout player, earning the distinction of the competition’s top scorer with an impressive tally of 43 goals. His contributions, along with those of his teammates, propelled Nigeria to a noteworthy second-place finish, underscoring the team’s growing stature in the international handball arena. This marked Nigeria’s second time losing in the final of this competition, the previous instance being in 2019 against Chinese Taipei. They had demonstrated their consistent performance by finishing third in the 2023 edition.

While the loss in the final prevented Nigeria from qualifying for the IHF Men’s Youth World Championship later that year, the team’s performance offered a glimpse of their potential. The experience gained from competing at such a high level will undoubtedly serve as valuable preparation for future tournaments. With continued development and refinement, Nigeria’s U-18 men’s handball team is poised for further growth and success on the international stage. Their strong showing in the IHF Trophy’s Intercontinental Phase, despite falling short in the final, serves as a testament to their commitment, talent, and determination.
