The Nigerian Customs Service, Area 2 Command, Onne Port, Rivers State, achieved remarkable success in 2024, exceeding its revenue target and making significant strides in combating smuggling. The command generated N634 billion in revenue, surpassing its target of N618 billion by N16 billion, representing a 103% achievement rate. This impressive figure also signifies a substantial increase of N321 billion compared to the 2023 collection, marking a remarkable 98% growth. This financial success was attributed to stakeholder engagement, inter-agency synergy, intelligence sharing, and the dedication of the command’s officers.

A major highlight of the command’s achievements was the seizure of twelve 40-foot containers laden with illegally imported pharmaceuticals. These seizures encompassed a vast quantity of illicit drugs, including 1,721,100 bottles of codeine cough syrup, 510,000 tablets of diclofenac, and 7,100,000 tablets of tramadol and tramaking. The total duty paid value of these seized containers amounted to a staggering N20.3 billion. The command stressed the importance of these seizures in protecting public health and upholding the integrity of the nation’s borders. Several items used for concealment, such as sanitary ware fittings, chilly cutters, and cartons of TVS rubber were also confiscated, demonstrating the smugglers’ sophisticated tactics.

The Area 2 Command, Onne Port, further solidified its commitment to national security with the interception of significant quantities of arms and ammunition earlier in the year. This operation, which led to the seizure of 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of live ammunition, received commendation from the Comptroller-General of Customs, culminating in special promotions for eight officers involved. This recognition underscored the command’s dedication to anti-smuggling operations and its commitment to safeguarding the nation. The Comptroller-General’s acknowledgement served as a significant morale booster for the officers, motivating them towards greater vigilance and effectiveness.

Beyond the pharmaceutical seizures, the command reported a total of 76 container seizures throughout 2024. These containers held a variety of illicit goods, including vegetable oil, footwear, donkey skin, used clothing, and other undeclared items employed as concealment. The combined duty paid value of these seized goods reached an impressive N150.9 billion. This figure reflects the command’s consistent efforts to curb smuggling activities and protect legitimate businesses. The diverse nature of the seized goods highlights the multifaceted challenges faced by the customs service in combating illicit trade.

In addition to its anti-smuggling endeavors, the Area 2 Command, Onne Port, actively facilitated legitimate trade. The command processed over 2.7 million metric tonnes of exports, primarily consisting of agricultural and mineral resources such as sesame seeds, aluminum ingot, granular urea, wheat bran, and orange peel. The Free on Board (FOB) value of these exports amounted to $953 million, equivalent to over N1.2 trillion. This robust export activity underscores the command’s role in facilitating economic growth and promoting Nigerian products in the global market.

As part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, the command distributed starter packs to various beneficiaries within its host community. These packs, which included grinding machines, sewing machines, and food items, were provided to orphanages, widows of deceased customs officers, and other community members. This gesture highlights the command’s commitment to giving back to the community and supporting vulnerable groups. The initiative demonstrates a broader understanding of the command’s role, extending beyond its core mandates to address social welfare within its operational area. This holistic approach fosters positive community relations and reinforces the command’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen.
