The 2024/25 football season witnessed a remarkable surge in goal-scoring prowess from Nigerian players across various European leagues. Victor Osimhen, despite initial transfer setbacks, found a home at Galatasaray and exploded onto the scene, shattering his previous career-best record. His 33 goals and 6 assists across all competitions, totaling a remarkable 39 goal contributions in 37 games, eclipsed his 31 goals and 4 assists from Napoli’s Scudetto-winning campaign the previous season. Osimhen’s goals were distributed across the Turkish Super Lig (24), the Europa League (6), and the Turkish Cup (3), solidifying his status as a prolific goalscorer.

Ademola Lookman, although experiencing a late-season goal drought, also surpassed his previous best for Atalanta. His tally of 19 goals and 7 assists in 37 games across all competitions, including 14 goals in Serie A and 5 in the Champions League, outshone his 16 goals and 9 assists from the previous season. While Lookman’s individual performance flourished, Atalanta missed out on replicating their Europa League triumph from the prior year, where Lookman had notably scored a hat-trick in the final.

Cyriel Dessers, despite facing criticism from fans and pundits, delivered a commendable performance for Rangers. While the team experienced an underwhelming season in terms of silverware, Dessers personally thrived, registering 25 goals and 7 assists in 52 appearances. This marked a significant improvement on his previous season’s tally of 21 goals and 6 assists, proving his resilience and ability to perform under pressure. Even though the team’s overall success was limited, Dessers’ individual contribution remained a bright spot for the Gers.

Alex Iwobi’s contributions for Fulham went beyond mere goal-scoring, solidifying his legacy in the Premier League. His standout performance saw him net 9 goals in the Premier League, surpassing his previous best of 5 from the prior season. Iwobi’s consistent development as a midfielder was evident, demonstrating his increasing influence on Fulham’s attack. Beyond his goals, Iwobi’s overall goal contribution also reached a new peak, surpassing his previous best of 3 goals and 6 assists with Arsenal in the 2018/19 season. His impressive season also saw him climb the ranks of Nigerian players with the most Premier League appearances, reaching 288 and trailing only Shola Ameobi (293). His vital contributions positioned him as Fulham’s second-highest goal scorer and third-best assist provider, highlighting his crucial role in the team’s pursuit of European qualification.

Tolu Arokodare enjoyed a breakthrough year with Genk, making a significant impact after a period of adaptation. Following a move to the Belgian club in January 2023, Arokodare initially scored 13 goals in over 40 games. However, the 2024/25 season saw him emerge as a key player, netting 22 goals and providing 5 assists, propelling Genk into title contention. Arokodare’s emergence coincided with his first call-up to the Super Eagles, marking a pivotal point in his career trajectory. His impressive goal-scoring record not only showcased his individual talent but also played a crucial role in Genk’s pursuit of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League title.

These Nigerian players showcased exceptional talent and determination throughout the 2024/25 season. Osimhen, Lookman, and Dessers all achieved career-best goal-scoring figures, while Iwobi elevated his game to become a key figure at Fulham, both in terms of goals and Premier League legacy. Arokodare’s breakout season at Genk underscored the depth of Nigerian talent emerging on the European stage. Their individual achievements not only elevated their own careers but also enhanced the reputation of Nigerian football globally. Their collective success represents a golden age for Nigerian strikers, marking a significant moment in the history of Nigerian football.
