The Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), led by its president, Mr. Ifedayo Akindoju, organized a grand reception and dinner in Abuja to celebrate the referees’ success, acknowledging the hard work, dedication, and perseverance they demonstrated in pursuing this prestigious certification.

Mr. Akindoju lauded the referees for their unwavering commitment and the pride they have brought to both the NTF and Nigeria. The president highlighted the transformative impact of their accomplishment on the Nigerian tennis landscape, predicting improvements in officiating standards, further development of the sport, and inspiration for aspiring young officials within the country.

The presence of certified referees positions Nigeria to attract more international tennis events, boosting the sport’s growth and visibility on a global scale. The quality of officiating in both local and international tournaments hosted in Nigeria is expected to see a significant improvement. Furthermore, the achievements of these referees serve as a powerful motivator for younger officials across Nigeria, encouraging them to pursue certification and contribute to the development of tennis. The NTF has pledged its unwavering support to nurturing and encouraging more referees to strive for excellence and achieve the highest levels of their careers. This commitment underscores the federation’s dedication to fostering tennis development and cultivating a culture of excellence within the Nigerian tennis community.

Efe Okwagbe, Chairman of the Nigeria Tennis Umpires Association (NTUA), expressed profound gratitude to the NTF President for organizing the celebratory event, emphasizing that the association values and recognizes the president’s continuous support. He commended Mr. Akindoju’s unwavering dedication to the growth and development of referees in Nigeria, emphasizing his constant presence in both joyful celebrations and challenging times. Mr. Okwagbe also appealed to the president to extend the working days of referees during tournaments, recognizing the extensive work they undertake before, during, and after events. This includes pre-tournament preparations, post-tournament reporting to the ITF, and other essential tasks. He further advocated for the inclusion of the newly certified ITF referees in upcoming international tournaments in Nigeria, especially the J30 event scheduled for June, providing them with valuable experience and promoting local talent.

Mr. Okwagbe concluded by acknowledging the immense contributions of Edmund Ajoge, Managing Director of Tombim Services Ltd. and a prominent patron of NTUA, to the growth of tennis in Nigeria. Mr. Ajoge’s consistent support for tournaments, players, and umpires has been instrumental in elevating the standard of tennis in the country and inspiring other sponsors to invest in the sport.
