The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Nigeria has recently announced significant changes regarding the services offered at its National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment centres. The commission revealed in a video posted on its official social media platform that it would no longer provide data modification services at these centres. This policy shift is part of NIMC’s ongoing efforts to enhance the overall national identity management system and to improve the customer experience for Nigerians seeking to update their personal information associated with their NINs.

NIMC’s decision to discontinue in-centre modification services aims to address and alleviate the long wait times and lengthy queues that have become a common frustration for citizens. By directing users to its new online self-service modification portal, the commission hopes to provide a more convenient alternative for updating identification information without the need for physical visits to enrolment centres. This move is expected to not only streamline the process but also reduce the burden on both citizens and service providers in managing in-person modifications.

In the video announcement, NIMC elaborated on the numerous benefits of using the online self-service portal. The commission emphasized that this new system is designed to empower users, allowing them to securely and efficiently modify their personal information from the comfort of their homes or any other location. By transitioning to an online system, citizens can expect a more user-friendly experience and a quicker turnaround time for modifications, enhancing the overall management of their national identity.

Moreover, NIMC highlighted the importance of security in this transition. The commission reassured users that the self-service portal has been developed with advanced security features that protect personal data during the modification process. In conjunction with these changes, NIMC’s Director General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, shared an update on the growing number of National Identification Numbers issued in the country. According to her statement, as of last month, the total NIN registrations had increased to 110 million, reflecting a 2.39 percent growth from the previous total of 107.34 million recorded at the end of May 2024. This increase signifies a growing recognition of the importance of NINs among Nigerians and indicates the ongoing efforts of the commission to foster a comprehensive national identity management system.

The overall strategy pursued by NIMC, including the introduction of the self-service modification portal, is indicative of a larger commitment to modernizing identity management in Nigeria.
