The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project have forged a collaborative partnership to bolster agricultural productivity and food security in Nigeria’s semi-arid regions. This partnership recognizes the critical role of timely and accurate climate information in empowering farmers to make informed decisions, optimizing agricultural practices, and mitigating the impacts of climate change on vulnerable farming communities. The collaboration aims to leverage NiMet’s expertise in weather forecasting and climate data analysis to develop and implement a Digital Precision Agricultural Extension (DPAE) platform tailored to the specific needs of smallholder farmers.

This DPAE platform, a central component of the partnership, represents a significant step towards modernizing agricultural extension services in Nigeria. It will serve as a centralized hub for disseminating real-time weather updates, predictive agricultural information, and customized advice directly to farmers. This information will encompass a broad range of topics, including input recommendations based on prevailing weather conditions, market trends and pricing, and weather-related advisories to anticipate and mitigate potential risks. By providing farmers with access to this critical information, the platform aims to empower them to make informed decisions regarding planting schedules, crop management strategies, and market engagement, thereby increasing their resilience to climate variability and enhancing overall agricultural productivity.

The ACReSAL project, under which the DPAE platform is being developed, aligns strategically with Sub-Component B2 of the initiative, which focuses on promoting climate-smart agriculture at the household level. The project recognizes NiMet as a crucial stakeholder in the design, implementation, and long-term sustainability of the DPAE system. This collaboration underscores the understanding that effective climate-smart agriculture hinges on access to reliable weather and climate information, enabling farmers to adapt their practices to changing environmental conditions and optimize resource utilization for enhanced productivity.

The partnership between NiMet and ACReSAL signifies a commitment to fostering a more integrated and data-driven approach to agricultural development. The DPAE platform will play a pivotal role in connecting various actors across the agricultural value chain, including farmers, public extension agents, input suppliers, traders, processors, and mechanization service providers. This interconnected system will facilitate seamless information sharing, enhance coordination, and promote efficiency throughout the entire agricultural ecosystem. By strengthening linkages between these stakeholders, the platform aims to create a more robust and resilient agricultural sector capable of adapting to the challenges of climate change and ensuring food security for Nigeria’s growing population.

NiMet’s involvement in co-developing the weather and climate dashboard within the DPAE platform is crucial for ensuring its relevance and usability for the target audience. The agency’s expertise in weather forecasting and climate data analysis will ensure that the information provided is accurate, timely, and presented in a format that is easily accessible and understandable for farmers. The interactive nature of the platform will allow farmers to engage with the data, pose questions, and receive customized advice tailored to their specific needs and location. This personalized approach to agricultural extension services is expected to significantly improve the adoption of climate-smart practices and enhance the effectiveness of the platform in achieving its objectives.

The development and implementation of the DPAE platform represent a significant investment in the future of Nigerian agriculture. By empowering farmers with real-time climate information and predictive agricultural insights, this initiative aims to drive sustainable agricultural intensification, improve resilience to climate change, and enhance food security for the nation. The collaborative approach between NiMet and ACReSAL, engaging stakeholders across the agricultural value chain, ensures that the platform is not only technically sound but also addresses the practical needs of farmers and promotes a more integrated and efficient agricultural ecosystem. This partnership underscores the importance of data-driven decision-making in agriculture and sets a precedent for future initiatives aimed at strengthening the resilience and productivity of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
