Paragraph 1: The Nigerian Army’s Offensive Against Oil Theft in the Niger Delta
The Nigerian Army has launched a significant offensive against illegal oil bunkering and refining activities in the Niger Delta region, resulting in the arrest of 20 suspected oil thieves and the destruction of 19 illegal refining sites. The operation, conducted between May 19 and 25, 2025, spanned four states – Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom – and was carried out in collaboration with other security agencies. This coordinated effort underscores the government’s commitment to tackling the pervasive issue of oil theft, which significantly impacts Nigeria’s economy and environment. The operation yielded substantial recoveries, including over 589,000 litres of stolen petroleum products, highlighting the scale of illegal activities in the region.
Paragraph 2: Operational Successes in Rivers State: Dismantling Illegal Refineries and Recovering Stolen Products
Rivers State, a hub of oil production, witnessed concentrated efforts by the troops. Operations in the Okolomade, Orashi, and Ozochi Forests within Abua/Odual Local Government Area (LGA) led to the discovery and dismantling of numerous illegal refining camps. The infrastructure destroyed included eight cooking ovens and massive storage facilities containing over 300,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and 250,000 litres of stolen crude oil. Additional equipment seized comprised seven reservoirs, six receivers, and a generator. Furthermore, operations at the fringes of the Imo River resulted in the destruction of nine illegal refining sites and the seizure of various refining equipment, including 23 drum pots, 10 drum receivers, and 321 sacks filled with over 16,000 litres of stolen petroleum products. In Ogba/Ndoni/Egbema LGA, troops recovered 245 sacks containing approximately 12,500 litres of illegally refined AGO, demonstrating the widespread nature of these illicit activities.
Paragraph 3: Further Operational Successes in Rivers and Delta States: Intercepting Suspects and Disrupting Operations
The army’s operations extended to Ogbonga Forest in Bonny LGA, Rivers State, where a suspect was apprehended in possession of incriminating evidence, including a fibre hand-pulled boat, a 400-metre hose stained with crude oil, four spanners, and a mobile phone. This arrest provided valuable intelligence about the methods employed by oil thieves. In Delta State, illegal refining sites were targeted at Jeddo in Okpe LGA, resulting in the seizure of over 1,000 litres of stolen products stored in polythene bags. Additionally, in Ogbu Aladja, Warri South LGA, a significant quantity of illegally refined AGO stored in sacks was recovered, further disrupting the illicit trade network. These interventions demonstrate the army’s determination to curb oil theft across multiple locations in the affected states.
Paragraph 4: Operations in Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom States: Maintaining Security and Denying Operational Freedom
In Bayelsa State, the troops dismantled an illegal refining camp in Biseni, Yenagoa LGA, which included four cooking ovens, drums, and receivers, along with a considerable quantity of stolen petroleum products. This action further curtailed the capacity of illegal refiners in the region. Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom State, the army focused on maintaining a strong presence in the creeks, land, and waterways, effectively denying economic saboteurs the freedom to operate. This proactive approach aims to deter future illegal activities and protect critical infrastructure. The comprehensive nature of these operations across multiple states demonstrates the Nigerian Army’s commitment to addressing the root causes of oil theft.
Paragraph 5: Legal Proceedings and Asset Management: Ensuring Accountability and Responsible Handling of Recovered Products
Following the operations, all arrested suspects were handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution. This crucial step ensures that those involved in illegal oil bunkering and refining are held accountable for their actions and face the full weight of the law. The recovered petroleum products were managed in accordance with established operational procedures, ensuring responsible disposal and preventing the illicit products from re-entering the black market. This meticulous approach safeguards the integrity of the operation and reinforces the army’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
Paragraph 6: The Army’s Commitment to Combating Oil Theft: Creating a Secure Environment for Legitimate Operations
Major General Emmanuel Emekah, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, reiterated the army’s unwavering resolve to intensify efforts in identifying and dismantling remaining illegal refining sites across the Niger Delta. He emphasized the army’s dedication to creating a secure environment where legitimate exploration activities can thrive, highlighting the importance of protecting Nigeria’s oil resources for the benefit of the nation. The GOC’s statement underscores the long-term commitment to combating oil theft and fostering a stable and prosperous oil sector.
