The Nigerian Medical Association’s Call for Prioritizing Physician Welfare
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a resounding call to action, urging employers of medical personnel, particularly government entities, to prioritize the welfare of doctors as a critical strategy to address the persistent challenge of brain drain, often referred to as the "japa syndrome," within the country. This appeal was made by the NMA President, Professor Bala Audu, during a press conference held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The event was a grand reception organized by the state’s NMA chapter to honor newly appointed commissioners, including those responsible for health and insurance.
Professor Audu emphasized that the scarcity of medical professionals is not unique to Nigeria but is a global phenomenon. He underscored that the most effective way to retain medical expertise within the country is for governments at all levels to make the welfare of doctors a top priority. This includes competitive remuneration, improved working conditions, and access to professional development opportunities. By addressing these critical needs, Nigeria can create a more attractive and sustainable environment for its medical workforce, stemming the tide of emigration to countries with more favorable conditions.
Professor Audu commended Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State for implementing a health workforce retention policy aimed at enhancing the welfare of medical personnel. He specifically praised the policy’s focus on creating a more conducive work environment and providing incentives to retain doctors within the state’s healthcare system. This, he noted, is a crucial step in addressing the shortage of doctors and improving healthcare access for the citizens of Akwa Ibom State.
The NMA President further urged the governor to ensure the consistent application of standardized healthcare practices across all healthcare facilities in the state. He emphasized the importance of tertiary healthcare centers, such as teaching hospitals, having adequate infrastructure, equipment, and qualified personnel to provide high-quality care. This includes ensuring that all state-owned teaching hospitals meet established standards for facilities, staffing, and equipment. He stressed that the availability of functional equipment and a suitable work environment is essential for medical personnel to effectively serve the population.
Dr. Aniekan Peter, the Chairman of the NMA in Akwa Ibom State, echoed these sentiments, commending Governor Eno for appointing three commissioners with medical backgrounds to the state’s executive council. He pledged the association’s unwavering support to the commissioners and the governor in their efforts to address the healthcare needs of the people. This collaboration, he believes, is essential to ensure that the health sector receives the attention and resources it requires to function effectively.
Dr. Peter also highlighted the NMA’s commitment to improving healthcare access, particularly in rural areas. He mentioned the association’s "health center initiative," launched in March of the same year, which aims to expand healthcare services to underserved communities. He expressed optimism that collaborative efforts with emergency care and women’s services (ECWS) and teaching hospitals would further enhance healthcare delivery, particularly for those residing in rural parts of the state. This partnership, he believes, is crucial in achieving equitable access to quality healthcare services for all residents of Akwa Ibom State.
The overarching message from the NMA is clear: prioritizing the welfare of medical professionals is not merely a matter of fairness but a strategic imperative for strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system. By addressing the factors that drive doctors to seek opportunities elsewhere, the country can retain its valuable medical expertise, improve healthcare delivery, and ultimately, enhance the well-being of its citizens. The NMA’s call to action serves as a reminder that investing in the welfare of healthcare workers is an investment in the health and prosperity of the nation as a whole.
