The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has reiterated its invitation to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the APC. This renewed call comes after an earlier invitation extended in April 2024, shortly after the Supreme Court affirmed Mutfwang’s gubernatorial victory. The forum’s chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, highlighted the governor’s commendable performance in office as the primary motivation for this persistent invitation. They believe that Mutfwang’s leadership qualities and achievements would be a valuable asset to the APC, particularly in a state where the party currently lacks gubernatorial control. This latest appeal underscores the APC’s strategic interest in securing Plateau State, the only state in the North-Central geopolitical zone not currently governed by the party.

The APC Forum envisions Mutfwang assuming a prominent leadership role within the party in Plateau State. They believe his defection would solidify the APC’s dominance in the North-Central region and align the state’s development agenda with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” initiative. The forum contends that a unified political front under the APC banner would streamline development across the entire North-Central region, facilitating a more cohesive and effective implementation of federal programs and policies. This, they argue, would ultimately benefit the people of Plateau State and the broader region.

Furthermore, the APC Forum emphasizes the potential benefits of a closer working relationship between Mutfwang and President Tinubu. Joining the APC, they suggest, would provide Mutfwang with direct access to the president and facilitate a collaborative approach to governance. This alignment, they argue, would enable the governor to more effectively deliver dividends of democracy to the people of Plateau State. By becoming part of the ruling party, Mutfwang would be better positioned to leverage federal resources and support for the state’s developmental priorities.

The APC Forum’s invitation is also framed within the context of the ongoing crisis within the PDP. They caution Mutfwang against remaining in a party they perceive as increasingly fractured and unstable. The forum expresses concern that the internal strife within the PDP could negatively impact Mutfwang’s political future, particularly his prospects for re-election in 2027. They urge him to proactively avoid potential fallout from the PDP’s internal struggles by aligning himself with the more stable and dominant APC.

The APC Forum’s persistent pursuit of Mutfwang highlights the strategic importance they place on securing Plateau State. Their repeated invitations, coupled with a closed-door meeting held with Plateau State APC leaders and chieftains in March 2024, demonstrate a deliberate and concerted effort to woo the governor. The forum has also formally communicated its intentions to both Mutfwang and the APC’s national secretariat, underscoring the seriousness of their invitation.

In summary, the North-Central APC Forum’s renewed call for Governor Mutfwang to join their ranks is motivated by a confluence of factors: his perceived performance as governor, the strategic importance of Plateau State within the North-Central region, the potential for strengthened collaboration with the federal government, and concerns about the stability and viability of the PDP. The forum believes that Mutfwang’s defection would not only benefit him personally but also serve the best interests of Plateau State by facilitating greater access to resources and aligning the state’s development agenda with the national vision. They urge Mutfwang to consider their invitation seriously and act decisively to avoid potential negative consequences stemming from the ongoing turmoil within the PDP.
